Question about Maytag HYE3658AY Electric Dryer

Grinding noise while drum turns

It is a maytag performance pye2300,3300, purchased new in 2002. there are just 2 adults and we use it 4-5 times a week, light loads.
about a week ago the dryer would make a grinding noise during operation. if i give it a light/slight nudge, it'd run without the noise--sometimes the entire cycle, sometimes for a 1/2 minute or so.
could the problem be a bushing, washer, etc., or could it be that it isn't 100% level (it wasn't) and that could be causing the noise?

Had same kind of problem.. made a horrendeous squealing at times.

turned out the bearing in the back was worn through. It cost me about $40 and 2 hours time, to open it up, clean out the whole dryer and replace the bearing. The works was all easy. It was just time consuming to vacuum and clean the unit to new status.

The bearing on mine, consisted of a big steel ball pivot, attached to the back of the drum with 3 screws, and a plastic bushing it sat in, attached to the back of the dryer.

the trick was finding how to open the dryer up, without damaging it. after that. it was all easy street.

If the machine was delivered new, has all the transit straps been removed ? If the machine was delivered without transit straps then the drum could be off a support and it's drum wheel could be grinding on the rear panel.

Why Is my Maytag washer making a loud grinding noise?

Possible Drum barrings failure. Drum unseated making contact with Housing. switch off. turn drum by hand check it is free of obstruction.

Not a job I would recommend for a DIY enthusiast. unless housing is out of place obstructing drum.

Incidentally. if this is a brand new machine. ensure all the drum transport fixings (if aplicable) were removed, and not fouling the drum.

Loud grinding noise

These are the bearing that the drum rides on. There are bearings in the back and the front. Replace all of them where you hear the grinding, front or back.

Drum won't turn

This problem may be caused by:

- Broken motor. If the appliance ir more than 4 years old, a new motor may be needed.
- Broken latch or failure at the door sensor. Check if the door closes properly.
- No electricity. It is plugged?
- A serious mechanical problem. If you were able to hear grinding noises before it stopped working, it's time to get a new one.

Grinding noise

In my humble opinion, a dryer making a grinding noise is worth repairing. Possible Problems:

Worn Drum Rollers (Very Likely): More of a thumping / grinding sound. Replacing drum roller supports is considered to be a routine "normal ware & tear" repair with parts costing about $15 - $20 or so. Its' kinda like a tune-up for a vehicle. The rollers can be located in a couple places, but are typically located on the inside rear of the drum; upon dis-assembling the dryer.

Broken/Loose Blower Fan Wheel (Likely): The blower wheel can become loose or brake off the motor shaft and can make a "rumbling / grinding sound and can run about $15 - $25 for the part. The degree is difficulty when repairing a little high, but is commonly performed.

* Note: Removing and threading the blower wheel is reverse to prevent the fan blower from natually spinning/coming-off "Righty loosey, lefty tighty"
