Re: handset not working

Three possible problems - Bad handset, bad handset cord, or bad telephone. Try another handset and cord from a known good phone. If the problem phone still doesn't work the hookswitch spring may be weak. You can remove the screws from the bottom of the phone and take the bottom off. The hookswitch will have a small spring that you can stretch or rebend to put more upward force on the hookswitch to make it positively go off hook. Also the dtu phones have a jack for the handset and a jack for the headset on the bottom - make sure you are using the handset jack.

A button must be programmed as a "headset" key. When activated, it will lamp red, and put the conversation on the headset jack under the phone (next to the handset jack).

Or you can purchase a headset with an auto lifter for the handset. It picks up the handset enough to answer the call, but transfers the conversation to your headset.

Problem with the head set

It requires a headset key to be programmed in Memory Block 4-12 as a type of Feature Access Key in order for the jack underneath the phone to work. Then you just press the button to speak via the headset.

Cordless phone keeps reading, "lift handset"

This would normally happen when the cordless handset was still in the charger stand. Are you saying it will still tell you to lift the handset after it's removed from the charger stand or base? I would not waste money buying a new battery as it is most likely not the problem but if you have more than one handset you should try swapping batteries. Removing and re-inserting the battery may reset the phone and clear up the problem as well.

Ringer Volume

I am assuming this is on a DTU 16D nec phone. On the right side of the phone is a volume up and down button. If someone calls you, you adjust this while the phone is ringing. If you adjust it after you answer it controls the voice volume (what you hear through the ear piece) if you adjust it while the handset is down but there is no one calling you it adjusts the display contrast on the phone.

Speakerphone does not work

Try pressing the Feature button and dialing the digit 1. This will turn the microphone on and the MIC lite should turn red. Don't lift the handset or press Speaker, just press Feature 1. This will also turn the MIC off if you want it disabled again.
