Question about ADIC Scalar 218M DLT Tape Drive

Open Question

Picker unable to unload tapes

All, I am getting a situation where the picker will grab a tape & then be unable to deliver it to either a slot or drive. The error I get when I manually attempt this task is an "EF" then "6F". In the manual it states: "The jaws are moving and expecting to see sensor feedback to know when to stop movement, but the servo processor says that the jaws have reached a limit first". My question is this: "Can this be adjusted or will this require a picker replacement?" Thanks, Bill

SOURCE: I have freestanding Series 8 dishwasher. Lately during the filling cycle water hammer is occurring. How can this be resolved

Hi there,
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

Here's a link to this great service

Good luck!

SOURCE: Empty tape drive acts as if it has a tape in it.

Sounds like you have a bad tape in you media set that is breaking your drives.

Check inside the flap of all media to make sure the tapes are OK before using any of them (yes on that library it will take ages to go through them all) but finding the bad tape/s will stop it ruining more drives.

The drives should be easy for a repair company to fix but not so easy for an end user.

I suggest sending them to www.tape-drive-repair.com a few at a time for them to fix and service for you. They are pretty good price wise and offer a long warranty on the drives too.

SOURCE: ADIC Scalar 100 Picker Problem

It will probably be cheaper to replace the unit with a new LTO4 as service is very $$$ expensive.

Hi Edouard

This sounds like the picker has failed to complete the power on self test (POST).
This may be due to a damaged library or simply due to a tape blocking the picker movement.

POWER OFF!
Try opening the library to make sure your tapes are all properly located in the magazines and have not fallen out.
Also try gently moving the picker to see if you can locate any other obstructions. Be very careful as you obviously do not want to break the picker or anything else accidentally.

This sounds like a picker fault (rotation blocked). Remove the mags from the library.
remove the power from the library (and your watch!)
Gently feel about inside the library and remove any additional tapes floating about inside.
Try again.
If this does not work then try going to http://tape-drive-repair.com as they have spare parts and pickers that they can use to fix the library.

IBM TS3200 tape Library error code 9E 09 Hi There

OK if you are in the UK then defiantly try going to http://tape-drive-repair.com/ for them to help as these can be a pain to seat the picker correctly and you might well need parts anyway.

However if you are in the US and are unable to do that:-
Dissconnect the power.
Gently raise and lower the picker by hand and again check for any obstructions.
Sometimes the picker comes off its rails or skips a gear.
You can also try raising the picker to the very top before lowering again - make sure the picker is totally level when it returns to the bottom.
This is the same unit (in effect) as the dell TS4000 so that might also give you another search term when googling the issue.
These units are great libraries but you must be very gentle with them when doing this sort of procedure as it is easy to bend and break things.
Also make sure the library is totally square in the Rack - i have one unit where the customer had one corner 1U too low in the rack but the library had still managed to be screwed into the rack. Because the library was no longer square, things started to jam and fail to pick tapes. Once square again all was well.

The library picker arm cannot move to the home position. There could be something blocking it. Try the Reset option from the Configuration menu. This is detailed in the library user guide.

How do I remove a stuck tape?

Power the unit down and very carefully unscrew the cover.  The greatest care must be when taking the tape out so that you don't bend the unit.

Consider blowing it out to get rid of dust and it very likely has a problem that will require service.  My quantum px502 had a stuck tape and I took the cover off but the picker was already off track - $700 to fix that and replace a sensor.

It gets heavy use and was serviced before in the three years it has been running.

Tape jammed. How can it be manually ejected?

Most or all robotic librarys must have the cover removed.  There is not "automatic" way to unjam the tape picker.

Tape stuck in drive

The best way that I have solved this is by using the move commands from the drive, and move it from drive to any free tape slot. Also if that does not work, put a few tapes in the drive and perform the random moves test in diagnostics, that will fool the drive to move the tape.
