On ours, we had this same problem and all we ended up having to do was turn the light bulb up towards the black plate and it comes on, then turn the bulb down towards the feet of the microscope and it goes back off.

What is genetic drift?

Genetic drift is the change in allele frequency from one generation to the next that occurs because alleles in offspring are a random sample of those in the parents, as well as from the role that chance plays in determining whether a given individual will survive and reproduce.

DNA mutation, Chromosomal mutation, and cell recombination are the ones you can view with a light or electron microscope. The book "Essentials of Physical Anthropolgy" gives more information about genetic drift and details about different ways of study.

Hope this helps!

Edu science 600x microscope: no instruction manual and I cannot see anything through the lens (only a blurred blue light). What must I do to be able to see something ? Thx

Well I have the instruction manual, but it is not too helpful. When I was a child I put fleas and ants on the slides, but I guess this microscope is different. Here is what my manual says.
How to make a prepared slide: If the given sample is not thin and transparent, it cannot be observed by the microscope as the light from the reflector or the light source does not pass through it. Fibers, pollen, wool, or salt can be observed easily and a cover glass is optional. Clear samples are stained first with a drop or 2 of methylene blue, Eosin or other dying solutions (not included).
1. TEMPORARY MOUNT: Wipe the slide and cover glass clean. Slice a thin sample with the micro-slicer (blade is very sharp...adult supervision). Pick up the sample with tweezers and put it on the center part of the glass slide. Put one drop of water on the sample using the needle that came with your kit.
2.PERMANENT MOUNT:Proceed as above, however, before covering the slide with the cover glass, add a few drops of gum media (not included, available at the store) or Canada balsam solution or transparent adhesive glue with a disecting needle to the slide. Push down on the cover glass with the tweezers to fix it in place and leave to dry for a day.
VIEWING LIVE BRINE SHRIMP:
1.Pour a small amout of brine shrimp eggs into the petri dish.
2.Add enough water so that the eggs are submerged and add just a dash of table salt.
3.Place the petri dish in a well lit area (under a lamp with a 60 watt bulb is good, for 24 hours).
4. When you see movement in the petri dish place it on your microscope stage, turn on the light and watch the brine shrimp in action.

How do you turn light on

Two mistakes we all make. ONE: check the way you inserted the batteries. Look at the picture on the battery case thing. One spring is negative the other is positive. TWO: the light is made to turn on ONLY when you flip the mirror down or the light up. the metal connections touch and you complete the circuit, no buttons necessary. they built this produced pretty ghetto to keep it cheap i guess.

What are the uses of microscope

A compound lab microscope is generally intended for the following:
examination of prepared glass slides of: Organic Tissues organic fluids cells of plants and animals
The are used extensively in clinics to examine urine for the presence of gout or bacteria. Or to examine other body fluids.
Specimens need to be prepared on glass slides and sealed with a "glass cover slip". Prepared slides can be order from many different sources over the internet. Try searching "prepared specimen slides" or "prepared microscope slides" or use www.Microscope.com
A compound scope is not effective for examining things like insect structures, or any "solid" objects which light cannot pass through. For such research a "stereoscope" is required. The stereoscope directs light from above like a spot light.

Need replacement part for my sons vivitar microscope set

You turn the light on by LITTERALLY turning the light on it's hinges. It swivels and when the light is in it's downward position (with the little light bulb pointing towards the ground) it is off. When you flip it over (with the little light bulb pointing towards the the veiwing platform) it should turn on.

If you look closely, you'll see the metal-to-metal contact pieces that trigger the light to come on.

Good luck!

CAN'T GET IT TO WORK

Same problem, tried flipping it every which way with no luck - both the light itself and the arm that hold it. Finally, when trying to change the batteries, I noticed that they battery housing was odd: usually the positive end of the battery is against the node, and the negative end against the spring. This is true for one of the batteries, but for the other one has to turn it backwards, so that the positive end is against the spring. This is the only time I have seen a battery go in that way, and so naturally I had not looked for -/+ labels, but had just put the batteries in the housing in the way one would assume they go. When I changed the one around (and it was labeled that way), it solved the problem and the light came on. I don't know if I just got lucky, but you might as well try and see if it works for you.
