Question about Chainsaws

1 Answer

Poulan 1950 I have a low and high carb. adj. but they are restricted by a plastic covering over the adjustments. The plastic restrictors can be removed. I would like to set the carb. adjustments up like it is suppose to be coming out of the box. I cleaned the carb., replaced fuel lines and primer bulb and am having a hard time starting. I just got the saw so I don't have any history. I had it started a couple of times but ends up dying out and then difficult to start. I thought if I started with initial setting then adjust low 1/4 turn out until I get results then it would be downhill. What do you suggest? Joe joe_mich@rocketmail.com

Tighten the left screw and right screw all the way.
losen the left screw 1 full turn and the right screw 1.5 turn and that should be the factory setting good day.

If the carb is adjustable, it will have two small screws on it ( maybe covered with a plastic cap) One is low speed and the other is high speed. Adjust very little at first.

How to adj the crab on a poulan chainsaw

if the engine is in good shape..screw in both carb jets adjusting screws till they seat lightly, then back them out 1 1/2 turns, srew in the throttle adj screw a turn and start the motor,,warning if the chain is on make sure the blade isnt likely to touch anything when the engine starts as you will have to have the brake off to get started and adjusted. With the engine running, adjust the throttle srew until it is idling just above shutting off speed, then adjust the "L" low speed jet to get the best idling speed without srewing it in much, reset the throttle srew, then , while trying to accelerate suddenly each time, open the Low jet a little at a time until the machine accelerates smoothly without hesitation. Reset the throttle srew to a position that the chain stops running at idle and check again that the acceleration is without hesitation ( usually with "L" jet about 1/4 turn out more than best idling). The high "H" jet can now be set to give the best power while cutting a block of wood.

Most poulan chain saw have three screws idle, high, and low.. if you look air filter cover you will usually see three holes and the high and low will usually have plastic covers on it.. adjust the low 1/4 of a turn and the idle screw in about 1/4 or until the idle picks up... On the plastic cover where the three holes are you will see H which is High L which is Low and I which is Idle... Let me know if you have any problems.. thanks

The screws do not have a flat head? How do I adjust the carb?

if you have plastic caps on the screws you have to pop them off to turn the screws. some screws have a slot and some don't.
for the one's that don't use a pair of needlenose plyers to turn them.

Adjust high low screws on carb.

I just finished looking at mine and I think they made it that way so back yard mechanics dont tinker with it. If there is a Poulan dealership in yout area that would be the place to get it.
