fan works, but freezer thawed out and fridge is not cold. Do you know what the problem could be. Would I be better off buying a new fridge?

Sound like the start components are weak on the unit. you can get new start components or get a three n one control that repalces the starting components and all that you have to do is wire it up just like the diagram on the bag. or the lem could be low voltage gpoing to the refriger ator. The manufactures reccommend that you never run a refrigerator on a extenstion cord of any kind. It is also a good Idea to take the refrigerator electrical outlet off of any type of GFI receptical of any kind. you don't want to come home to a defrosted mess just because the outlet decided at that Tibme to trip.

How can you tell if the fan needs to be replaced?

Hi McRobbie

The devil in the details here is where the clicking is coming from, and which fan we're talking about. There can be fans circulating air in the freezer or fridge, or blowing a certain amount of freezer air into the fridge (the latter is more or less how the fridge side is usually cooled). There is also a fan that will blow on the compressor to keep it from overheating. What you may need to do is, with the fridge away from the wall and plugged in, come near to the compressor (a black metal object that looks like this
image refrigerator compressor Google Search The clicking can be the system trying to start the compressor. There is usually a bit of gear tied into the compressor that lets it build some juice in a capacitor for the startup to get moving. If the compressor isn't actually starting, then likely as not the fan won't start either, making it a symptom rather than a problem.

Is the fridge cooling now? If so, then the compressor is able to start. If not, the clicking is probably failed compressor starts. Otherwise, there will be the fan right next to it (see about halfway down the page here

Compressor works, cooling fan does not, fridge and freezer are correct temp.

Where exactly is this fan located? Are you saying that if you spin it it does start to run? For how long? Tx, Petra

The fridge is not cooling!! The motor and fan are both making noises as though they are working and the freezer is working perfectly. I have turned the thermostat up to the maximum but still no cool air.

If there is no cooling on the fridge but the freezer is cooling then the compressor and gas pressure seems good. So to check the set for blocks in the ducts we must shut off the fridge.Keep it off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if Ice forms then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked.
The fan making noise can be due to frost build up .If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
Do not set thermostat up to max but keep it to normal .So try this test from the outside and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Fridge question

Sounds like you mad have a bad relay or overload on the compressor. I would also check your condenser fan motor to make sure its running and blowing air on the compressor to cool it. If its not running the compressor may be overheating and shutting off on its overload. If the condenser fan motor is running I would assume that you would need a new relay and overload it will come in a kit. Usually it will make a clicking sound when the compressor is TRYING to start and then shuts off on its overload if the start components are bad.
Hope this helps _MJ_

Fridge and Freezer won't cool.

The evap fan is running - but is your compressor motor running -t his is what i'm concerned about - 82F ? That is very high - this suggests to me there is no cooling AT ALL - only the fans are working - and my gut tells me your compressor is not running AT ALL - I would rule out thermostat since when it kicks in and your evap fans turn on, your compressor should turn on too. If this fridge has electronic controls, have your motherboard / control boards checked, have your compressor checked. If your compressor is running and you can hear its distinctive humming sound, then you have a sealed system problem, a major one :) Have those two things checked.

LG Refrigerator has no cold air for fridge but freezer works fine

Sounds like the freezer fan(FF)is wearing out, This problem is very hard to diagnose because the fan spins but not fast enough to circulate the chilled air thru the freezer and refrigerator. This repair costs parts and labor around $300.00

Refigerator not cooling and hot to the touch

It sounds a lot like lost charge caused by a leak in your system. If your unit has been moved or improperly cleaned, some part of the pressurized system may be damaged.
Refrigerant (with very small molecules) may leak off over many years but it shouldn't happen in the single digits.
