Kenmoore side by side self defrost mode not operating correctly

Freezer coils continuously freeze up ; have tried to manually defrost with hair dryer but coils freeze over after several minutes. Is there a way to put the refrig/freezer into "self-defrost" mode ?

After manually defrosting, the water does drain and the fan does come on to blow over coils. No styrofoam on back side of panel -- airflow is correct

  • denjendiamon Dec 27, 2008

The door seals corredtly/tightly; The outside (room) temp has been around 80-81 degrees and humidity near 60-70 %

Is there a way to put unit into defrost mode?

When the coils ar emanually thawed does the water get removed by the drain ho;le or are you having to soak it all up with a shop vac? The drain may be frozen up and that would cause the water to stay in the freezer and product ice.you said that the coils foreese over after several minutes does tha fan come on and start moving the air over the coils? theres a sensor that should be bringing on the fan and that should keep the coils from freezing up. On thae back side of the panel is there styrofoam on it ? if there is stryofoam is part of it missing and the air flow now incorrect? Just a few more things to lok at. Thanks For using FixYa and don't forget to rate this solution please.

The coils behind the freezer compartment freeze up about once a month. After I take it apart and defrost with a hair dryer it runs fine... for about a month. Is this the main control board?

it can be,but before you replace that $100.00+ board, check the defrost heating element for continuity and also the defrost thermostat(both on the evaporator coil) as these go bad too and are much cheaper than the board

The freezer saection is freezing up causing the refridgerator to get warm, I defrost and this works for 2 weeks. What would you look for?

remove the rear panel inside the freezer in there will be the evaporator coil,if its covered in a layer of solid ice then defrost it with a hand held hair dryer, then with the power shut off to the unit unplug the defrost heater underneath the coil and test for continuity,if this checks good then test the defrost thermostat on the top of the evaporator coil, you will need to put this on a piece of ice or cool it to below to make the contacts touch otherwise it will show open(bad) if this shows good(closed),then check for 120 volts a.c. on this circuit when is in defrost mode

unplug unit, remove back panel inside freezer and manually defrost with hair dryer, sounds like you have a defrost problem, check defrost thermostat, defrost heater or defrost timer, defrosting with hair dryer will fix until it freezes up again

Freezer does not work at all little cooling in refrigertor side

your evaporator coil in the freezer is frosted up and iced over, you need to remove the back panel INSIDE the freezer behind the freezer shelves and defrost the coil with a hand held hair dryer, then check the defrost heating element located under this coil for continuity,if its good, then the defrost thermostat on the top of this evaporator coil can be bad or the defrost control be it adaptive or timed can also be bad,if you manually defrost it will cool for up to a week if its not too hot and humid outside and you don't open the doors too often

THE FREEZER STOP FREEZING AT THE TOP BUT THE BOTTOM

check the evaporator coil in the rear area of the freezer behind a panel for being iced over,if so defrost it with a hand held hair dryer, then check the defrost heater element for continuity under the coil,if this is o.k. then suspect a defective defrost control

The coils in the freezer compartment keep freezing over causing the refridgerator temp to rise

Most times the defrost heater and defrost thermostat need replaced. manually defrosting, removing rear panel in freezer, unplugging power from wall and using a hair dryer to remove the ice allows you to visually see th defrost heater burned out. I will get some photos and links and return soon, Thanks Sea Breeze

Does using a hair dryer to help thaw out freezer coils that have frozen over on a self defrosting unit damage anything?

I believe not. But if coil continues freezing maybe your defrost thermostat is not working

Freezer wont defrost and refrigerator is to hot

the evaporator coils in the freezer are iced up. either someone left the door ajar for a while, you didn't let the fridge sit empty and turned on for a day before filling it, there is an obstruction in the evaporator drain causing water to pool and freeze on the coils, or your evaporator fans are not working. you need to unplug the unit and either: 1- let it set with the doors open and defrost with the ambient air (and soak up the excess water under the fridge); 2- find the back wall where the frost is, take the screws out and remove the wall, and use warm water to melt the ice on the coils (and soak up the excess water); or 3- use hot air (hair dryer). be careful with the hair dryer. just enough to melt the ice and not to heat up the fins and tubing. clean up any extra water inside, check the drain under the coils for obstructions, make sure the fan works, empty the fridge, turn it on, close it, and fill it tomorrow. also, there is a self-defrost timer on the fridge. look in the manual for it's location and setting.

Fridge and freezer not cold and frozen up

Can you remove the back panel inside the freezer and defrost the coils. Use a shop vac with the hose in the blow position instead of the vacuum position. And blow on the coils to defrost quickly. Hair dryers work also but prolonged use will burn up hair dryers. Now turn back on and see if the inside the freezer fan works. It should be running to keep the coils from freezing up. Also could be defrost timer. But this will be enough to get you going. Let me know how it goes. ken
