Question about Denon DRM-555 Dual Cassette Deck

Open Question

CanI get my deck to run in reverse mode without a tape/

I have just bought a second hand DRM-555. For cleaning purposes I am able to get the deck to play without a tape on the forward side but it will only run for a second or so on the reverse side. Does anyone know if there is an over-ride available to allow the deck to run for longer in reverse mode. Also does anyone know if the front case is removable on this deck to allow for cleaning.

Many thanks

I have managed to solve half of the original problem. The front case is removable on these decks but it is tricky!!!

I'm still working on the other part!!

hmmm...sounds like the transport motor/foot are stuck..open it up, and inspect around those items(where the tape actually clamps down) and see if you can see anything in there. Might even be a bug, no fooling..

as to repairs..you are most likely talking some major money, and a long time in the repair depot, which I believe is in Rio..I'll check that for you while you do this part.

Just bought a unit from a thrift store. Found same problem; FF & RW OK, but play engages then stops. Also noticed buzzing noise when power turned on. Opened unit, found broken capstan drive belt. FF & RW driven from different motor. Buzz was drive motor running freely with no load - when power is on, capstan is driven all the time for fast play/record start. Replaced with rubber band, and it works --- now looking for replacement belt.

Denon DRM-740 stops

This may mean the takeup reel is intermittent or that he cam system of the transport is not getting the correct feedback. I have hd some decks that had very little back tension and they would skew tape- and the audio would be gone before they would shut off. The deck need restorative work done to it and now is the time before is eats all your tapes up.

Denon DRM710 cassette deck. I need to know the actual output impedance of this machine. Or the minimum load it should "see." Have lost my manual which has the specs. Thank you.

Just curious, what load are you having problems with? It's a cassette deck, not an amplifier. Most Line Level outputs work just fine with other devices' Line Level inputs.

Technics M14 cassette deck has hum. Bought used and had hum but I got it to go away by switching the tape select dial to metal, etc. but hum came back later. I'm thinking ground or a wire to that switch. ...

If the hum is audible without monitoring a tape playback it has nothing to do with the oxide formulation or any aspect of the media.

Determine the conditions present whenever the hum is present:

Player just turned ON?
Tape deck Playing or Paused?
Tape deck Recording or Paused?
"Tape" selected at the receiver?
Any source selected?

What switch are you referring to? You could have a floating ground or shield through a Tape Monitor or other control. Audio cables between the Deck and the receiver could be faulty or require reseating with a twisting motiuon to remove oxide build-up.

Hum can enter any unshielded cable running near any motor, magnetic field or some light sources. Sometimes simply reversing the polarity of an AC power cord will cure it.
