Question about Western Digital Passport WDXML800UE (WDXML800UETE) 80 GB Hard Drive

Can't access files on external hard drive

I have a Gateway laptop w/XP and Western Digital Passport external hard drive 250 Gb. My computer crashed on me this morning and when I tried to get back in to the external drive all files were gone.

I have Folder Lock installed on the external and it was unlocked at the time of the crash.
Explorer shows the drive (F) but shows no files, not even Folder Lock. However, it indicates I have 129 Gb free space, which means the files should still be there, right?

I tried reinstalling Folder Lock on the drive, but still nothing.

I ran Pandora Recovery but it shows nothing on the disk.
I ran Trend Micro (w/all updates) I ran Webroot (w/all updates)
I ran CCleaner
I tried System Recovery - nothing changed. I went back 3 days - should I go back farther? Will it make any difference?

The drive has a variety of files on it - jpg, avi, doc, txt, mp3/4, etc.

With over 100 Gb on the disk, they can't have been deleted - that would have taken quite a long time. The files have to be there, but how do I recover them?

I am having the same issue with my WD external drive. Mine is 500 GB and it shows that there are 0 files on the drive yet the space used is 425 GB /500. So there are files on the drive I just can't access them. I tried showing hidden system files and it still shows 0 files on the drive. Is there a good drive recovery that can get our files back? My drive was filled with all of my mp3's and movies.

Why a wd elements 320gb external hard drive only registers 298 gb when connected to computer?

Because the remaining space is for the file allocation tables. That tells the computer where to look on the hard drive to find the files. It's like an index for the hard drive.

I tried to format my 500gb WD passport essential with exfat using windows 7 for my mediastar pvr . Now neither pvr or windows 7 can see the harddrive

Windows 7 does _NOT_ support 'exfat' drives, as you have found out.
You can "format" the drive, to use 'FAT32' or 'NTFS' file-systems.

My computer is not recognizing my Western Digital passport elite what do I do?

Have to check it in the Device Manager that the new device have been detected or not. It may happen that when the external HDD connects to the computer for the first time computer cannot detect it as it is not properly formatted in proper file-system. Open Computer Management and click on Disk Management and format the device correctly to operate.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

Go to the following website listed below and download the file you need. It needs to be placed in the C:Windowsinf directory (not in any folder).

Western digital passport i/o device error

90% of the time this is a power problem. The USB port on the computer can not supply enough watts. Use an external USB hub that has a 5V power supply.

Western Digital Passport 160 external drive hangs system

My first suggestion is to try plugging the drive to one of the USB ports on the notebook and not to the ones on the card. Otherwise, try the drive on another computer to see if it's the drive. Then my next suggestion would be to try your USB card in someone else's notebook.
