Your post appears to be over a year old. Did you find a solution to the volume always coming on at 17 when powered up on the durabrand hm3817dt home player? By now someone must have answered you or you must have fould a solution elsewheer. I would appreciate help on this issue. I did download the manual only to find it to be the same garbage that came with the system.
BUT! I didn't discover that this unit is not actually made by Durabrand. It's made by GPX and I've included a link to the user manual for this product (It's the same model, but the GPX version is black and sports the GPX logo).

I sent a note to the manufacturer. Communication attached below.
We thank you for your interest in GPX and our products. We apologize, but the volume level on the unit is a factory setting that we are not able to override or alter.
Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

With the power off, push the alarm button twice and the clock symbol should go out. This means the alarm is off. Also when the alarm is on and the power is off, you can push the function button to select nothing (buzzer), cd or radio.
Hope it helps, I am trying to find out how to reset the default volume from 17 which is way too loud
