The answering machine keeps beeping and won't initialize.

We have a digital phone line through shaw cable. When we connected the answering machine it continously beeps. Can we use this GE Digital answering machine model #29875GE2-C with a digital phone line?

Our GE answering machine model #29875GE2-B was not taking messages, so we followed trouble shooting guide and unplugged power cable from outlet and machine and then plugged it back in to reset. Now the machine makes a continuous beeping sound and the display flashes. The machine had been working with our digital phone service prior to this problem.

Hi irwinbadin,

HP fax products are designed so that other telephone equipment can be connected on the same line as the fax. The unit must be connected first using a two-conductor fax/phone cable like the one that shipped with the HP product. Using a four-conductor telephone cable may cause problems receiving faxes or calls.

There are two different types of phone cables. There are two-conductor phone cables like what originally shipped with the HP fax product and there are four-conductor cables. HP fax products are designed to work with a two-conductor phone cable. Look at the end of the cable and verify that it has only two copper leads or wires. Replace any four-conductor cables with a two-conductor cable. Only two-conductor phone cables should be used to connect the all-in-one to the phone line.

Figure 1: The difference between a two-conductor phone cable and a four-conductor phone cable

Step one: Connect the phone line to the fax
The fax will have two or three sockets (or jacks) for phone lines. Some of these may have a removable plastic plug in them. These sockets will be labeled with text, To Wall Jack , or with a graphic of the wall jack. See Figure 1 below.

Plug the two-conductor telephone cable that came with the HP product into the telephone wall jack. Then, plug it into this socket as shown below.

In areas with above ground telephone lines and electrical storms (lightning), it is a good idea to purchase a telephone line surge suppressor and connect it between the telephone wall jack and the fax. This will help prevent damage to the fax from a lightning-caused power surge on the phone line.

Step two: Add other phone-line devices
To connect other telephone devices, use the other socket (or sockets) on the fax. These are identified by text or with a graphic of a telephone and/or computer.

Connect a caller ID unit between the fax and the telephone.
Use the information below that matches the devices you need to connect.

Fax and telephone
Connect a single-line telephone to one of the added sockets on the fax. The telephone will share the same phone line as the fax. See the illustration below.

When a telephone answering machine and telephone are connected, connect the answering machine to the fax and then connect the telephone to the answering machine as shown below.

Fax and computer modem
To use a fax and a computer modem on the same phone line, connect the fax to the computer modem. The modem socket on the computer may be labeled Line or Wall jack .

Fax, computer modem, and telephone
To use a computer modem and a telephone with the fax, connect the computer modem to the fax. Then, connect the telephone into the second phone line connector on the computer modem or the third fax socket (if it is available). The image below shows how to connect a computer and a telephone to a fax with two sockets.

Fax, modem, answering machine, and telephone
The image below shows how to connect a computer modem, answering machine, and telephone to a fax. Connect the computer modem to the fax, then connect the answering machine to the computer, and finally, connect the telephone to the answering machine.
If the fax has three phone line sockets instead of two, some of the devices can be connected to the other phone socket on the fax.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

It keeps saying "no line".

"No line" usually means that it is having trouble connecting to your telephone cable. Make sure to see that it is connected to the phone and to the wall. If it is, your cable might be faulty and you might want to replace it.

Thanks

I have the fax connected to the phone line with a splitter which is also connected to my portable phone and answering machine. when the phone rings it goes to answering machine if not answered and then to...

The fax machine should have two places on the back where you can plug in a phone cord. One of these is the input: where the cord from the wall goes, and should have either "in" or a picture of a wall phone outlet next to it. The other is used as a line through the fax machine and should have a picture of a phone or "out" next to it. Ideally, you would plug the fax machine directly into the wall and then your phone/answering machine into the "out" plug on your fax machine.

When in auto mode, the fax machine will listen in on the line when the phone rings and if it detects a fax signal (all the whirring and beeping) it will pick up the phone and receive. If there is no signal, it will simply allow the signal to pass through to the phone and answering machine.

How do i connect my hp 1240 fax\printer to my computer

The fax must be connected directly to the wall phone jack. Connect any other phone line devices, such as a telephone or answering machine, to the phone jack on the back of the fax

The phone line cable used to connect the fax must be a two-conductor (wire) phone cable, like the one that shipped with the fax. The fax may fail to send or receive faxes if the phone cable has more than two conductors. To determine how many conductors the phone cable has, look at the end of the cable. Most phone cable connectors are clear and you can see the number of wires

The Rings to Answer setting determines how many times the line will ring before the fax answers. Follow the steps below to change the rings to answer setting.
  1. Press Setup , press 3 , and then press 3 again to access the Rings to Answer setting.
  2. Press the Right Arrow to scroll through the available settings. When the desired number of rings is shown in the display, press OK .

To receive faxes manually, follow the steps below.

  1. Answer the phone like you normally would a telephone call. If the incoming call is from a fax machine, you will hear beeps or fax tones.
  2. Press either Start Black or Start Color to begin receiving the fax.
  3. Hang up the phone.

Our AT&T 1725 has quit recognizing when the phone is ringing. The phone keeps own ringing instead of beign answered.

There are a couple of things to try. First is to check the cable & plug that connect the 1725 to the telephone line. Disconnect the phone line from the back of the answering machine, plug it into a known working telephone, using cell phone (or another land line) call the phone number and see if the phone rings.

If it doesn't, replace the line cord and try again.

If it does ring, check the optioning to make sure it is set for, say 2 rings.

Also, is the telephone line a regular telephone company POTS line or is it one that is being provided by a cable modem? If your phone service is being provided by a cable company, the media converter might not be putting out enough voltage for the answering machine to realize that the line is ringing.

If everything is correct, replace the answering machine.

Switched to shaw digital phone service from mts. my ph # and my fax # are different numbers but when phone calls come in the fax picks it up instead of the phone.how do i change this?

Call a cell phone from the fax machine to find out what the machine's number is.
Be warned, tho, fax machines will not work reliably on digital phone lines.

Parasonic auto-logic answering machine

Hello, yes it sounds like your trying to connect a "analog device" to a "digital" telephone. If you wish to connect the answering machine to answer your line or lines, you should contact your facilities maintenance department and see if they can "hardwire" your telephone line (your primary phone number), to another jack in your office so your answering machine will work by being placed in "parallel" with your phone system and your primary phone number. If you have more than one phone line (number) you wish for the machine to answer, you will need to ask for a "analog extension" from your digital phone system and have it programmed to ring when any of your roll over lines ring. However, keep in mind the machine can only answer one call at a time, the other simultaneous callers will get a ring no answer until the first caller has hung up. Good luck, hoped to help. CG
