Question about GE Refrigerators

Refrigerator freezing food

About a week or two ago my water filter light came on indicating it needed to be replaced. Being the holidays i did not have the money to replace it right away. Then the ice stopped working. Then the water stopped coming out. Then the refrigerator started freezing everything in it, even on every level. I removed the filter and it was frozen solid. I replaced it with a new one. I have turned both refrigerator and freezer down to 1. Still nothing. Is thins something I can fix myself or do I need to call for repair and what is my problem?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Have you considered defrosting the unit? Might not be practical if lots of food stuff in there and with the holiday season and all but defrosting would heat up certain sections of the fridge. An alternative is to reset the unit by unplugging from the mains for an extended period of time with the door open but then again the problem of where to keep the contents for the time being.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

The unit has probably frozen up into the water/air channels because the filter was clogged causing water back up and then freeing that water.

You will need to unthaw all that ice.

Remove the food into a cooler or another freezer/fridge.
Unplug the unit. and open the doors. Remove the filter and let it set for several hours to that thouroghly.

Put the filter back in, plug it up, and give it an hour or so to insure all is well.
Dont forget to reset the thermostat.

The symptom that you described will need to be repaired by a technician. The repair will require some dis assembly and parts.
Your problem is air is bypassing the rear diffuser through the opening next to the baffle motor. The technician will install a kit it will include a foam gasket and user's interface board.
I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your refrigerator.

Hi,

This is a common problem that often doesn't have a clear, permanent solution. The first thing to check is the overall internal refrigerator temperature (see the Appliance Accessories section for a refrigerator/freezer thermometer). The proper temperature should be between 35 and 42 degrees. Here are some things to try:

  • If your refrigerator temperature is closer to 35 degrees, try turning the temperature up slightly.

  • If you find that the temperature varies a lot from the top shelf to the bottom (where it is coldest), try putting produce and other sensitive products on a higher shelf.

  • If the temperature is too low and you can't make it warmer by adjusting the thermostat, you probably have a defective thermostat. If so, you need to replace it, because they cannot be repaired. Other possible problems are a leak in the sealed (refrigerant) system, cold air migration (in side-by-side models) or a defective air damper. These problems can be quite difficult to locate and correct, we recommend you contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

Lower the refrig therm - if that does not do it then the assembly that regulates the amount of cold air that is being blown into refrig from freezer is sort of stuck on wide open position and your refrig is like a second freezer.

first run the diagnostics on the unit from the tech sheet inside the unit, then if thermistors are bad replace these there are 2 one on the left and one on the right wall in both fridge and freezer,if good per diagnostics then replace the electronic damper door located between the fridge and freezer compartments in the upper left hand corner of the fridge behind the plastic grille as these doors break and jamb open or shut and the temps can no longer be regulated during the diagnostics tests you can hear this door operate if its operating correctly, lastly,if these fail to solve your problem, replace the main control board in the back behind a panel

I have this same refrigerator, also purchased in 2006. Same exact problem. Fridge freezes, starting actually in the water line, you will notice water on door does not work, then top two shelves start to freeze. Lasts for a few days, then prob does not happen again for 6 months almost to the day. I've had this problem for almost 3 years!!! My service tech said to buy another, glitch in this system he can't figure out. Replaced damper x2, control board, and thermostat x2. Not sure what else to do. I hate the thought of more food lost to spoilage!

Refrigerator is freezing food AND broken ice container part.

Just lower it one number at a time , wait 24 hrs each time you re set it until you reach the right temp. 34-40 deg.

Your filter light has not came on most likely because it has not had the time to. You do not need to replace your filter every six months. This is a safe guesstamate from the manufacture , it depends on water quality and use of water , some filters will go years and years , the filter indicator does not even know if the filter is bad.
When you notice water pressure slowing when dispensing from the door you know the filter needs replaced.
Hope this gets you out of that service fee. This should FIX IT!
If you have any questions let me know.

    Check the door gasket seal.
Open the door for a few seconds and then close.
Immediately open the door again, and, if sealing properly, it should take more pulling force to open the door.
