Question about Gateway MX7118 Notebook

New SO-DIMM causes my Gateway MX7118 to lock up...

My Gateway MX7118 locks up (pre-Windows) when I insert a new 1GB 200 pin SO-DIMM of PC2700 (it only has 512MB internal). This is the second SO-DIMM I've tried. I assumed the first one was bad after it caused the lock ups, but after the same scenario with a second stick... I'm thinking there's something else. I wanted to try exchanging my new 1GB SO-DIMM for the internal 512... but was unable to get the unit apart. I removed every screw, but when I tried to get it apart... the casing would not separate. I was loose all around the sides and front. but seemed to have something holding it together underneat the keyboard area. Any help would be appreciated...

No good. I've even tried Live Chat with one of Gateway's "gurus". He told me the RAM was screwed (even though I've tried 2 different SO-DIMMs). He just seemed anxious to get me off the line. I asked him how to acess the INTERNAL SO-DOMM, because I couldn't get the chassis apart. He sent me a link to a site that illustrated how to remove a screw and access the external socket...

Okay
it's not gonna work that way
honestly you cannot just add the dimm and you may not be able to replace it with the one you got either.I WOULD TAKE IT TO A PC REPAIR take your new dimm with you and they will install it for you or at least tell you if it can be done.

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

Hi there. I am a RAM rookie. I have GAteway MX7118. are there two memory slots or one. It comes with 512 does that mean there are two slots and I can add a 1GB for A total of 1.5GB ?

Hi, defending on your cpu board usualy there are two slots, also if your board capable to 1 gigabytes memory, if your memory is DDR u can add 1 GB up . if your memory is SD you cannot add higher than 712 MB. if your memory is 512 and you want to add 1GB the total should be 1.5 you are correct in your calculation. thanks

How many pins in the hyundai ddr 512mb?

SO- DIMM 512 MB 333 Mhz / 200 PIN PC2700 64Mx8

DDR SDRAM memory has 184 pins, where as SDRAM has 168 pins. DDR SDRAM Memory is a new type of SDRAM that is able to double the read / write speed of the previous generation of SDRAM memory. There are currently, PC2100 (DDR266), PC2700 (DDR333), PC3200 (DDR400), PC4200 (DDR533) These DIMMs are 184 Pin in size and are not interchangeable with older SDRAM modules.

Is it possible to install high desnsity memory RAM on a T42

The T42 can support up to 2 Gb of RAM.
The laptop comes with 512Mb of RAM under the keyboard and a spare memory slot on the bottom of the laptop.
To install 2Gb of RAM put 1Gb in the memory slot under the kerboard - need to remove the old RAM and put the other 1Gb in the memory on the bottom of the laptop

T42 Memory specs.
  • 64-bit Double Data Rate (DDR) non-parity SDRAM memory
  • PC2700 at 333MHz
  • Two 200 pin SO-DIMM memory slots, one slot is pre-populated with 256MB or 512MB, leaving one socket available
  • Supports up to two 1GB SDRAM SO DIMMs
  • Supports maximum memory up to 2GB

Have a -problem getting my gateway to boot and recognize a new 1g pc3200 ram card? what am i doing wrong?

1.It's low density ram, right? (Unbuffered, Non-ECC) The chip configuration is 128MB x 64?

2.When you installed it. The AC adapter was removed, (Charger), and the battery? (If you didn't the ram is fried)

3.You inserted the ram stick, (Module, correct speak), at a 45 degree angle, the pins were lined up, and when you pressed the module down, the locks on BOTH sides clipped into place?
Uninstall, and reinstall the ram again. Doesn't hurt, and only takes a few minutes. (MAKE SURE there is NO electricity to the laptop!)

After reinstalling the ram, reboot the laptop. Sometimes it takes 2 to 4 times before BIOS will recognize the new ram. This is semi rare, but it does happen.

If nothing avails, then you have the wrong ram for your laptop PERIOD! (Hope you didn't get it off of Ebay!)
Try using Crucial.com

RAM upgrade is not working

A 200-pin PC-3200 SODIMM should work in your machine but it will clock down to 333MHz. Your computer has 2 slots with a max of 512MB per slot (1GB total system memory). For maximum compatibility you should stick with a low density (16-chip - double-sided) PC2700 DDR-333 SODIMM with a CL of 2.5. Link below to see an example:

Acer travelmate 2003lc will not boot with new ram

512MB (FT64MSD64V3F)
200 Pin Dimm - SDRAM - 2.5V - DDR - PC2700 (PC-333) - Non-ECC

is the correct type of RAM for your laptop.
Have you tried booting with all combinations.

512 in slot 1 --- Boots
move same dimm to slot 2 (on it's own) and try booting.
boot with 256mb in slot 1 and known to be good 512 in number 2

This laptop should allow up to 2GB RAM. So I don't belive it is an issue with the mother board not seeing the amout of RAM. I think it could either be flaky dimm or your slot 2 is damaged
