Question about Dewalt DC988ka 18 - volt XRP 1/2'' hammerdrill/drill/driver kit

Dewalt drill binding

When i release the trigger at high speeds on my drill, it comes to a stop with binding sound. Is this a clutch/brake issue, or no issue at all?

Did this tool just start doing this? Some cordless drill have a brake which create a short on the armature windings that stop it quickly and that may be what you are noticing but again is this a sudden noise if so you may have other issues with the tool. Let me know

If you noticed this sound the first time you tried the drill, it is noise of the armature brake.  This noise is normal and not a problem at all.  Michael Mittelsdorf

Most models have two selections, one for the clutch (which in effect regulates the torque applied) and the other is the gear selection ( usually a setting of 1, 2 & 3, with 1 being for driving screws and 3 for drilling purposes). In addition to those selections, the trigger controls the overall speed of the motor. These are all the control you have over the drill, granted the Dewalt tool is a bit torquey, but it is meant to be a construction tool.

Sounds like they could be the pins from the front of thh gearbox/clutch area. Can you turn the chuck/spindle fully by hand when the trigger isn't being pressed? If so then these are the pins that help to lock the spindle for tightening/releasing the chuck. You wil need to take it all apart again I'm afraid as I'm pretty sure you won't be able to get them back in the right place from the chuck end. They sit between the gearbox output plate and chuck spindle plate (both parts should be a sort of 'bow tie' shape) and they jsut sit independetly in there, two each side.

yes this is normal the spark keeps motor from stalling out by taking away the friction spark by making own spark
the clunk is the drill brake so you dont brake your hand when screw goes in all the way unlike old drills that kept going even when your hand was attached to it
