Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, try a CD disc cleaner that is readily available from most audio/video stores and even computer stores. They are designed to look and play like regular discs but with a brush like attachment designed to clean the lens.
Sony DVP-CX995V responds with
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Try first cleaning the lens with a lens cleaner CD (see here: lens cleaner cd)

If that does not work the unit must be taken apart to clean lens directly or replace lens pickup. In that case better sending it to a repair point.

I can guide you to clean optical lens if you have little technical experience and can open top cover of unit.
It is not difficult job, rest is your own skills.

I have just the dvd player, the player keeps ejecting the disc and not playing it

Could be lots of things, but here are a few easy ideas:
1) Is the disc Blu-Ray? A regular DVD player can't read Blu-Rays.
2) I think all DVD players can read CDs, but if the disc you're putting in is a CD, maybe that's the problem.
3) Maybe the disc is dirty. Wet the disc, wash it with dish soap (or hand soap, then rinse it clean and dry it off. You can use a cloth or a paper towel for washing/drying. When washing and drying, make motions across the disc from the inside hole to the edge; don't swirl around the disc.
4) Maybe the disc is not the same region as the player. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code
5) You've got a PAL (European) disc and an NTSC (American/Japanese) player.

Why does computer play only one disc in 2-disc set?

Look very closely at that DVD, Richard. Look for fingerprints or scarring near the transparent center section - DVD recording always starts in the middle and progresses outward, the opposite of vinyl records.

My 2 1/2 year old LG dvd/vcr recorder will play some dvds but will not play others. It says unknown disc. I was told to try a lens cleaner; I bought one and the lens cleaner says unknown disc as well. ...

Hi,

Your DVD /VCR says unknown disc because the
dvd which you have inserted is not of the supported format by player.

If you insert unsupported formats only it will say as unknown disc. This is not related with disc cleaners.

Please insert the supported formats and it will play the disc.

Thanx
