Hi
Try cleaning the DVD lens with a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol. The DVD lens is what emits the laser from the unit. Let it dry and try again. Also try using a different DVD. Let us know if it worked and don't forget to rate me :)

first step should be to clean the optical pick up unit. There is a special CD for cleaning of the optical unit (wet method).

If this does not provide a solution please come back and advice.

    Best regards,

I think laser optical block got stuck when it move forward. (sled servo problem)

Please observe lens movement If you can open top cover of unit.

Take out loaded disc and move optical block to inward and outward position by holding it in your finger and make sure dont touch lens itself to avoid finger prints on it.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the act of unplugging is simulating a reset just like in a computer. And just like in a computer, if a reset corrects the problem, then it was a glitch in the Operating System. In the Koss KS3102, it would be the firmware.

Another possibility would be hardware. Offhand, a possibly problem with the power supply of the unit, more specifically the standby +5VDC. Probably a filter capacitor either in the primary (most likely) or on the secondary (least likely).

Pls post back any other indicators if observed. Additionally, pls try to measure the resistance of the speaker through the speaker wires, should be between 4~8 ohms. This is just to eliminate the off chance possibility that the speaker is causing an auto protect.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Based on your additional information, try a CD disc cleaner
that is readily available from most audio/video stores and even
computer stores. They are designed to look and play like regular discs
but with a brush like attachment designed to clean the lens.

    Cheers.

It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that
guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grime, dust and
solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser
eye then fails to read the next track. Please refer to the image below.

That means that there is a short on one of the imputs or an internal problem.

Unplug all wires, and start the unit with minimal connections (one input or none, and only two speakers).
If you still have the problem, you need to send the unit for repair.

Call the number listed on te owner manual to get support.

Sounds like either the main or display power supply is failing. Might consider a new TV. Parts could be found but it might be hard to find them.

DVR making bad DVDs

Three suggestions:
1) take it apart and clean the laser and the spindle 'hub' that the DVD rests on
OR
2) get a 'cleaner' disk that will 'whisk' any dust from the laser diode.
OR as a final suggestion
3) replace the DVD recorder with another. Plain old EIDE parallel interface units fit fine.
This is a very friendly machine in that it will accept PC compatible hard disks and DVDR drives.

Either the disc is scrathed or you have to remove the cover and take a q-tip with rubbing alcohol and clean the lens.

Movies on my recorded discs freeze after a few minutes of play

Sometimes this unit gets "confused" - not sure why -- but try first using a CD cleaning disk and let it start and stop a couple times (sometimes lens gets dirty and does this) - if that doesn't help then try unplugging unit and leave unplugged (from wall socket) for about 30min then plug in, set local time and then see if the disks play okay - sometimes this "resets system"
