I get the message 'protected card' Next trick?

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked/protected", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common cause is having the tiny slide switch on the side of the card in the wrong position. The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. There are also other common causes if the above didn't help, with troubleshooting steps for this problem listed here.

Camera has taken photos fine in past- now when I try to take a photo I get the message "memory card protected" and I cannot take the photo. How do i remedy ?

You didn't specify the model of your camera, so I'm assuming it uses SD cards. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Stylus 600. When I turn camera on a blue screen comes up with a message [xD] Write Protect. What does this mean and how do I make it go away?

In order to remove the message of write protect you will need to format the xD memory card. The card has somehow become corrupted. To format the memory card - press Ok - right arrow to Mode Menu - down arrow to Card tab - right arrow to Card Setup - right arrow to Format - Up arrow to Yes and then press Ok. This will permanently delete all images from the memory card and you will be able to start taking images again.

"Memory card is protected"

This error message indicates that the memory card is locked. The switch on the memory card is in the write-protect position. Reset the switch as shown on the camera screen.
