Check your function keys, Typically all laptops even those that have a wireless switch has a way to turn on your wireless card using Function Plus the key assigned to your laptop. check the keyboard for the wireless icon and press function and that key.
it depend on the operating system you installed on the laptop if its windows 7 then there is a option on bottom right corner for connections click on that a menu will appear listing the available wifi networks click on the network and enter the password to get connected also ensure that your wifi modem is turned on ..
Try enabling windows zero configuration, and using the windows wireless connection manager.
There should be an option in the ralink program to enable the feature, after that push the button and click refresh wireless networks or the refresh button. If nothing happens or no wireless network are found try it again.
If nothing happens the second time your wireless card needs to be replaced you can consult your service manual at the hp support site for more info
In order to switch wireless on there is a Wireless assistant available in your Control panel like I am using a hp laptop so there's an HP wireless Assistant available in the control panel. Open it and there will be a WLAN option. Simply turn it on !!! Bingo !!!
there are two..a mechanical one, and a firmware one..check the panel on your satellite pro, to see IF the wireless is illuminated. if not, find the switch on front or side of unit, and turn that on first.
By default the wireless adapter is enabled on your HP PC. However there are many ways to disable your wireless adapter. It can happen by turning it off in windows or some application may disable it due to execution errors.
Most of the time, when a wireless adapter is disabled on a machine it is very often because someone has pressed the wirless button by mistake. If it has been pushed by mistake, turn the wireless back on by finding the wirless button on your machine and pressing it. Check for button location on the top of the keyboard or the side or front of the PC. Thanks
From your description I agree, its probably a damaged switch. I never recommend anyone taking apart a laptop unless they are a mechanical whiz, have experience with laptop disassembly or can afford to break it beyond using.
As far as turning the built-in wireless card on without the switch there might be a way. I don?t have a Compaq laptop to experiment with, however, my Dell Latitude BIOS settings has a setting to automatically turn on the wireless card at boot-up. Perhaps yours does too, during your laptops initial boot process get into your BIOS setup menu (press F2 or if that doesn?t work F10 keys). Look for an option relating to your built-in devices or wireless device. My Dell setting is fairly ovious: "Turn on wireless device". If you find a simliar option turn it on, reboot and look for the wireless adaptor.
Another option may be to buy an inexpensive UPS wireless adaptor. You can pick them up on Ebay for around $30, not as spiffy as the built-in but probably a lot cheaper than paying a repair shop to fix a three year old laptop.
