SOURCE: Dell Latitude D610 is over heating
Your best bet is to take it to a good local computer shop who can take it apart and clean out the fans in your laptop. maybe even repaste your cpu while they are at it. but if your familiar with doing it then do it, but if your not at all sure about anything inside your laptop, let someone who knows how to do it do it. let me know how you get on.

the problem is not the battery; what has happened is the coolant paste that pulls the heat away from the cpu (main) chip to the fan has dried up. you must remove the fan/heat exchanger off the motherboard and, put new paste on the chips that the heat exchanger sits on
radio shack sells the paste
Testimonial: "Pulled the thermal tape off of the heatsink and applied paste. took a few days for the paste to warm and spread evenly but I've had no problems since."

There is a small IC that Dell solders into their power supply as well as their batteries. When this parts fails you will have the type of problem you are having now. If you do a search on the web you will find a large number o sites that discuss this. Unfortunately there is no fix other than replacing your power supply. I had to do the same thing myself for the Dell laptop I use.
Backup all the data you want to keep on an external hard drive, flash drive, or rewritable CD. Resetting your Dell to factory defaults will erase all data currently on your computer.
Insert the Recovery CD into your CD-ROM.
Reboot your computer.
Watch the text in DOS carefully. When prompted to boot from your CD, do so.
Choose System Restore and then follow the instructions presented. Once system recovery beings, it may take a few minutes. Once it's done, your system will reboot again.
Remove the Recovery CD from your CD-ROM and store it carefully. Your system has been reset to the factory default.
