I have a 3 year old ys4500, I have done routine maintenance, have replaced fuel/air/spark. fresh fuel. While running, engine stopped. The starter is spinning, gear engaging, motor is spinning, just not turning over. Change spark and filters, fully charged battery. Still the same, all spinning, not starting. I have read about cut off switches, solenoids ect. Any help out there????
Look under 'My Profile' (Longhorn294 in the top right corner of this page)on page 5 at this post and solution. "craftsman riding mower starter will spin but not engage". Dwain
does it turn over slow or fast if it turns slowly thats the problem so it could be battery or starter they have to have a good amount of rpms to burn fuel right when starting if not it floods out the engine with gas hope this helps thanks wade
If it starts cold and runs for 10 min then it sounds like the fuel cap is not venting properly, try runnin engine with fuel cap loose and see if it dies. 9 times out of 10 the fuel cap is the culprit. Let me know
you carburator just needs to be cleaned/adjusted, and if your original fuel filter isnt clogged and looks clean, leave it, but the air filter is a good idea to change at least once a year (grass shavings covered filters dont help the engine much).

take the fuel line off at the carburetor. if fuel is coming out then you have a plugged carburetor. take it off and apart. clean it really good with carburetor cleaner and put in a new needle and seat. it should run as good as new.
did you check for spark? you need air fuel and spark for engine to operate. check all of these then if it still wont start check the ground wire from coil to switch
If you have not already performed routine maintenance this year replace the spark plug, fuel and air filter. Make sure you are using a fresh and proper fuel/oil mix. Check that there are no leaks from the primer bulb or fuel lines and that the carb is not loose (allowing it to pull in to much air). Failing that start it and let it warm up a minute or so. Then use something to support the tines off the ground and hold the throttle wide open (protect yourself and others from the rotating tines). Adjust the fuel mixture screws on the carb as per your owner's manual or until you find the 'sweet spot' and know the engine is running at full rpm (you will be able to tell by the sound). If these steps do not solve your problem then a carb repair kit would be the next step. Good luck.
If you have difficulty with starting the 2-cycle trimmer (especially if it has been sitting for 6 months or more):
It is most
likely you will need to service the carburetor to a higher degree than you have done. Today's modern fuels
will, over time, gum up the carburetors and small passage-ways within
the carburetor making the carburetor ineffective. Diaphragms will become stiff and ineffective. A carburetor rebuild
kit can be a DIY project and are inexpensive.
You
can also remove the exhaust or muffler to visually insure that the
small screen (if applicable on your actual model) is clear of
carbon build-up. Clean/replace and retry.
Before you rebuild your carburetor or remove the exhaust, try the simple things below:
1. Air Filter maintenance. Your air filter needs to be reasonably clear. You can clean with water/soap, insure it is dry and lightly oil and replace. 2. Replace your pre-mix fuel or determine that is no older than 2 months old. I know you have done this, but insure it is fresh AND is of the correct ratio (typically 23:1 to 40:1). 3. Follow the fuel lines (especially within the fuel tank) any deterioration in the lines will allow air into the system which will contribute to a difficulty in starting. Fuel lines > 6-7 years old often need to be replaced. 4. Remove the fuel filter within the tank and clean by blowing compressed air through the filter and using soap/water.
Retry. These are the issues to about 95% of starting problems for 2-cycle string trimmers.
what is the model, manufacturer and year of mower?
has any maintenance been performed on this mower?
if no, try replacing the spark plug and air filter (it's possible the spark plug could be fouled and/or the air filter is clogged) be sure to follow the manufacturers recommendations for oil, gas, filters and plugs.
I would change transmission fluid and differential fluids. check to see if it has a fuel filter also I know they stopped putting an inline filter somewhere around your year model and just has one in tank that doesnt have to be changed. you can also change air filter and inside cabin air filter located behind glove box . The spark plugs are platinum good for 100,000 then tune up needs to be done. plugs and wires, use only ac delco platinum plugs and ac delco wires. a little more expensive but way better to me than the others. they have coil packs so there is no distributor cap or button to replace.
I think there is a carburation problem.Take the carburator, carefully disassembly and clean it.Near the needle there is a round tehnological cover from alluminium.Take it off some way (a new one is needed). In that hole there are some small holes ,make conections with Venturi wall from carb(also small holes),Clean them.Assembly the carb, check the air filter andthe fuel filter.
