Does a router or combo need to be connected to computer?

I have only one computer, a laptop, and need to use it in more than one room in my apartment. I have internet connection via cable, and have one modem. So far my only computer is connected to the modem, but I will need to move it around the apartment. Will a router suffice, or do I need to get a modem router combo in spite of having a modem already? Does the combo or the router need to be connected to the computer?

As you already have the modem you only need a router. In all cases the modem connects to the WAN port on the router.

I think your best bet surely would be to go for a wireless router though? Then you wouldnt have to trail ethernet cables all round the house. I'm sure your laptop has a wireless adaptor built in unless it;s very old.

I always use Netgear networking stuff so forgive me posting a link to a nice 54G wireless router :-) :

I have linksys 2.4 ghz + one 12' line. My new computer is in another room, 32 feet from cable modem how do I connect to internet?

I'm assuming that one computer isn't wife enabled. Depending on where the non wifi computer is located in relation to the router, you will need another either patch cable or a wifi adapter.

If you modem is not wireless then you will have to purchase a wireless router. If you have a wireless router or just bought one then you can follow my guide here for all the steps needed.

I have wireless Internet but my computer says I do not, although my room mate has a connection on his computer

If you laptop has thewireless card driver installed then -
Then you need the router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

A friends iof my gave me this router, but I don't know how to install it so that i can use it with my laptop in my living room. my internet is connect to my computer in my room. My main internet is in...

You have a few options. If you already have a router, set this one up as an Wireless Access point. It pulls signals from the main router and you can connect to this one. BUT your signal could be weak depending on the distance, walls etc. If you can make a cable run, use it as a switch. (Extend your ports, and as a wireless point. Go to Cisco Linksys and download the manual. It is not difficult. Use the main router as a your DHCP and this one as a wireless point. You will need to set up the SSID and security (Securty is optional, but I would do it). Give it a SSID different then your main one and you can setup your device to connect to the one with the strongest signal (Most do this by default.

I bought a new wireless laptop and want to connect to my netgear router

Is your netgear router already working ?
Is there any other computer able to go online using the same router ?
If there is any other computer online then you don't need to change the settings of the router.
You need to connect to the wireless network.

Router issues in my apartment.

When to moved into the penthouse, there are more walls between the wireless router and the laptop in the bedroom. The walls are probably reinforced concrete walls which will stop or weaken the radio waves penetrating into different rooms. When you lived in a house this was not a problem.
The only way to solve this problem is to move the wireless router near an opening such as a door and move the laptop as close as possible to the wireless router to get a better signal strength.
The outer way is to install a wireless repeater or connect a long network cable to the router and the laptop.

Airport card only works in same room as router

Do you have a cordless phone in the apartment?
how many rooms do you have and in which room is the signal low? What router do you have?

Intermittent Connectivity:
NOTE: Before following the steps in this article, check if your wireless computers have stable connection when connected to other wireless networks (hotspots).
This article assumes that all wireless computers are experiencing intermittent wireless connection with the router.
Frequent wireless disconnection can be caused by different factors such as:

  1. Wireless interference within the network.
  2. Wireless settings of the router are still set to default.
  3. Firmware is corrupted.
Reducing Wireless Interference
If you are experiencing frequent disconnection from the wireless network, it helps if you check the following factors, all of which can greatly affect your wireless signals:
your cordless telephone system (or even your neighbors’), or other nearby equipment. Try to change your router’s channel to 1 or 11 (the default channel is 6) and restart the wireless computers.
Physical obstructions: Your router or wireless computers may be losing connectivity because of physical obstacles such as walls and floors. Try to move the equipment to different locations to find a better link.

  • Placement of the router:
  • Router mfg'ssuggests that you place your router as high off the ground as possible. When placing the router in a high location, leave a distance of two feet between the router antenna tips, ceiling, and wall. If your signal passes through multiple floors, place the router on the upper-most floor, and high up in the room.
  • Surroundings: Keep the router away from large metal objects, bodies of water (fish tanks, bathrooms), and any electrical equipment including television sets, microwaves, radios, etc.
Customizing Wireless Settings of the Router
Having default wireless settings on the router may cause conflict with other routers within your network range. change the SSID (network name) and the Wireless Channel of your router. Also, if it is possible, enable the Wireless Security of your router.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

New laptop, connected to router, no connection to internet

Your DHCP server is either disabled or have not enough room for anymore computers. set the number of ips to "more" than what you need ie 3 or 4.

My 3 different mac laptops with airport can't connect to my wirless

Sounds like you might be accidentally connecting to a neighbour's network instead of your own. You need to go into your wireless settings on each laptop and tell them to connect to your own network.
