Question about Apple Power Mac G4 Cube Desktop

1 Answer

The dreaded question mark???

My G4 cube can not find its hard drive.  I re set the PRAM, I disconected the  mouse and key board, I tried to reinstal mac OS 9.1 and Mac OSX pressing the  C button. Nothing helped. I get some progress when using the install disk for OS 9.1 it reboots halfway then it freezes. I do have  OS 9.2 and OS X installed. When I try to use the install disk for OSX the CD gets ejected right away. I am totally lost and puzzled. Please!! anyway with a solution?? Thanks for just reading this.

It sounds as if your hard drive is damaged and is not mounting. As you are running OS 9 I suggest using Norton Systemworks and run it's disc repair facility Disc Doctor. This will make repairs to the hard drive to allow it to mount. (Unless the disc is too badly damaged). If this is the case you will need to replace the hard drive and re-install all your system and applications. If you haven't backed up your info, the damaged disc can be scanned and your files saved by a computer repair shop.

White screen on startup

Thank for contacting Fixya, I will be glad to assist you.

When experiencing an issue with booting up to a white screen, you can perform several steps to attempt to resolve this issue.

Option 1:

• First, hold in your power button for approximately 10 seconds to do a hard shutdown, if your Mac is not already turned off.

• Once your Mac is shutdown, you will need to perform what is called a PRAM reset (Parameter RAM)

• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously .

• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

• Now, hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the start up sound for a 2nd time.

• Release the keys and allow the Mac to start up.

If this procedure does not resolve your white screen issue, try this next option below.

Option 2:

-PMU RESET-
The Power Manager is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is usually on the logic board of your Mac computer.

It is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.

• If the computer is on, turn it off.
• Disconnect all the connections going into the Mac except for the Power cord.
• Once all connections have been disconnected, remove the power cord from the Mac.
• Wait 20 seconds.
• Reconnect the keyboard, mouse and power cord back into the computer.
• Press the Power button to restart the Mac computer.

Let me know if either of these processes help resolve this white screen issue.

Thank you.

Regards,

-The MacTechTrainer

My iMac G4 turns on and goes to the grey startup screen with the apple and loading circle, but stays there, and gets stuck, and after a few minutes shuts off on it's own.

You may have to reinstall you OS e.g. tiger, leopard with the disks that came with your computer. that should solve your problem

My powermac G4 was working then the screen told me to hold down the power button to reboot. I did that. Now when I turn it on that is all I get. It comes on and it tells me to hold down the power button to...

Try replacing the PRAM battery on the motherboard. Radio shack carriers them for about 10 dollars. Start up from CD set clock and choose your hard drive as startup volume and reboot.

? imac g4 ? problem starting

This looks to be a hard drive issue....if you are familiar with the machine enough to take off the bottom plate.....requires a torx tool. I would take off the bottom plate and disconnect the hd, and then see if the machine will boot to cd...if it will then boot to cd then it is a hard drive... i would be careful though as there is a pad on the processor that cools it and if it becomes dislodged you can overheat the processor....

Computer will not go into sleep mode

External drives (hard drive, DVD burner, iPod, USB drive), printer, a worn out mouse button, debris in/on the keyboard, and cats are all things that can cause your computer to refuse to sleep (or wake it shortly thereafter).  Rule out these first.  I have had the same problem in the past.  It is almost always one of these that causes the problem.

Resoring my g4 cube model #m7886 to factory

Get a copy of Tiger OS10.4 on DVD. The latest system, Leopard (OS10.5) is a bit too heavy for a cube. You can either purchase from Apple or "borrow" a copy from someone. Apple system software can be installed on more than one machine. Put in the DVD and restart holding down the otion key so the computer starts from DVD and follow the instructions for a "clean install" erasing the hard drive.

G4 firm ware problem

Take the battery out for an hour. Zap the PRAM about ten times and see if it starts. If not try booting from the OS CD holding down the "C" key at startup. If it still won't start try a different hard drive and test the memory. Try a different CD ROM drive. That is all I can think of right now.

Flashing apple

The flashing question mark / picasso face means your com puter cannot find a bootable volume or start up disk. Basically, it cannot find your operating system to load. That could mean a few things. Mainly it means your hard drive has failed, and is not performing properly, or cannot be detected. It could also mean the bootsector of the hard drive ( where it wrote os x when it was installed ) has bad blocks or sectors, preventing it from reading the disk correctly. if the hard drive is anywhere from 3 -4 years old or older, all of these options are likely. YOu can try to power the computer on holding down the OPTION key. THis will boot your machine into start up manager. Also try this procedure with an OS X cd or dvd inserted. If you have another macintosh running 10.3 or later, that has a firewire port, you can boot the emac into target disk mode by holding down the "T" key. The other mac should be on , and hopefully the emac will appear on the desktop fo the other computer. THis allow you to hopefuly recover the contents of the emac.

Hope this helps, KEEP ME POSTED.
