Question about Apple Power Mac G4 Cube Desktop

1 Answer

The dreaded question mark???

My G4 cube can not find its hard drive.  I re set the PRAM, I disconected the  mouse and key board, I tried to reinstal mac OS 9.1 and Mac OSX pressing the  C button. Nothing helped. I get some progress when using the install disk for OS 9.1 it reboots halfway then it freezes. I do have  OS 9.2 and OS X installed. When I try to use the install disk for OSX the CD gets ejected right away. I am totally lost and puzzled. Please!! anyway with a solution?? Thanks for just reading this.

It sounds as if your hard drive is damaged and is not mounting. As you are running OS 9 I suggest using Norton Systemworks and run it's disc repair facility Disc Doctor. This will make repairs to the hard drive to allow it to mount. (Unless the disc is too badly damaged). If this is the case you will need to replace the hard drive and re-install all your system and applications. If you haven't backed up your info, the damaged disc can be scanned and your files saved by a computer repair shop.

Stuck on safe mode screen says panic: we are hanging here...

Try switching off the machine and unplugging. Leave for 5 minutes, then plug back in and switch on, once you hear the first chime from the computer, hold down the alt+cmd+P+R keys (PRAM). Until you hear the second chimes, then let go the keys. If this doesn't work I suggest the same procedure with the switch off etc...but this time when switching back on immediately hold down the 'C' key (don't wait for chime) and start in safe mode. Once you are there reinstall the Operating System from the disk. Alternatively, if you can get to the disk utilities runs a check on the hard drive and hit "repair'.
Try this...hope it helps

My power mac G4 is not opening safemode as well as it is not boot from CD

Two possible things are wrong either your hard drive has gone or your system has corrupted. Put your instal or system disk in start it up holding down the c key. Once it has started check that the hard drive exists by go to the menu bar and selecting the disk utility. If the hard drive shows it means that it is okay run the disk utility check drive and then run the repair permissions. Then try restarting, if it works then you are back up and running again. If the drive shows up and you restart and the same thing shows up with the grey screen, you will need to reinstal your system. You do this by starting up with the instal disk holding down the c key and run the instal script. To keep your hard drive contents your will MUST use the preserve users instal.

If your hard drive does not show up the hard drive is probably a gonner and you will have to purchase a new hard drive and instal a fresh system.

Hope this helps

My screen is on but just have a small camera in the middle of the screen blinking.. G4 power book can you help?

I seen a blinking folder with a question mark in the middle in folder, in the middle of a display screen, but not a camera.

Either way, you are not able to access your main desktop so that is where I want to help.

A blinking folder with a ? in middle, is an indication that your bootable Mac OS X volume cannot be found.

If you do, I would first recommend you try this procedure first:
(PRAM Reset)
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} • First, hold in your power button for approximately 10 seconds to do a hard shutdown, if you have not already turned your Mac off.

• Once your Mac is shutdown, you will need to perform what is called a PRAM reset (Parameter RAM)
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously .

• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Now, hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the start up sound for the third time.
• Release the keys and allow the Powerbook G4 to start up.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If this still returns you to a blinking ? folder, try this process:
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} DISK UTILITYYou can use your Mac OS X install disc to repair your hard drive and Mac OS X volume using Disk Utility. Click the link below to try this procedure.
* Apple Support Link:
Use Disk Utility to Repair Disk

Should neither of these processes work and you still boot up to a flashing ? folder, then your only recourse is to use your Mac OS X installation disc and perform an Archive and Install procedure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} This procedure also allows you to save your applications, files and folders without the old directory interferring with you then accessing those files and creating a new Mac OS X Directory.

Here is the Apple Support Link for that procedure:
Archive and Install

This should get your Powerbook G4 back to normally functionality without any serious data loss.

While is was searching on the internet my iBook G4 locked up. I tried to reboot and it locked up again. I tried to reinstall OSX but during the install it locked up. I replaced the memory and hard drive...

Dude, if you have all the current updates for your OS and applications, then you got a logic board issue. Especially if you you keep seeing the spinning beach ball of death or the dreaded white screen of death.
The iBook G4 is the poster child for logic board defects, because it has to do with the way the circuit boards were flowed.  Apple won't fix this for the iBook G4.  You got to do a big class action lawsuit like they did with the iBook G3 before they will replace the logic board.
Best bet is to sell this thing on e-bay as a non-working unit and get you a better laptop.

My iMac G4 turns on and goes to the grey startup screen with the apple and loading circle, but stays there, and gets stuck, and after a few minutes shuts off on it's own.

You may have to reinstall you OS e.g. tiger, leopard with the disks that came with your computer. that should solve your problem

? imac g4 ? problem starting

This looks to be a hard drive issue....if you are familiar with the machine enough to take off the bottom plate.....requires a torx tool. I would take off the bottom plate and disconnect the hd, and then see if the machine will boot to cd...if it will then boot to cd then it is a hard drive... i would be careful though as there is a pad on the processor that cools it and if it becomes dislodged you can overheat the processor....

Computer will not go into sleep mode

External drives (hard drive, DVD burner, iPod, USB drive), printer, a worn out mouse button, debris in/on the keyboard, and cats are all things that can cause your computer to refuse to sleep (or wake it shortly thereafter).  Rule out these first.  I have had the same problem in the past.  It is almost always one of these that causes the problem.
