Determining if computer has a built-in microphone

How do I determine if I have a built-in microphone on my Toshiba Satellite computer? I can hear sound through speakers but can't speak back (e.g., to use Skype or Yahoo Messenger). Please tell me where to look for the specs on my computer for the microphone. Thank you! (PS This question has been posted before but no satisfactory answers).

when I right click on the volume icon I see: Sound: Recording: Microphone: Realtek High Definition Audio: Not plugged in. Does this mean that I need to plug in an external microphone or do I need to "turn on" an internal microphone? I really appreciate your help.

  • ecg5 Dec 29, 2008

I believe you mean the 2 buttons for "exclusive mode" under the advanced tab. These are checked and I still get the "not plugged in" message.

  • ecg5 Dec 29, 2008

It does say microphone but I'm pretty sure I will need to get an external microphone. I checked the specs online for my computer (A215 S7437 Model: PSAFGU-00L002) and it says Ports: Audio: Microphone input port, Headphone output port. I really appreciate your help. Thank you!

Ok, the easiest way is to right click on the little volume icon in bottom right taskbar next to the time. Then click on recording devices. If it says microphone there then you have one. Depending on what else it says we may have to do other things.

Doble click on realtek and then on advanced. Make sure those 2 boxes are checked.

When you first right click volume and relect recording device. Is the realtek microphone set as default? to be sure just click once on it and if you can click on default button at bottom do so and then click ok, close window and restart.

Yes all laptops have external ports for plugging in microphones. But they also have an internal one. For example a headset and mic combo. Best of luck

Do toshiba satellites c655 have a built in mic?

The Toshiba Satellite C655 does not have a built in microphone, but it does have a mono microphone jack.
The following website has microphones that are compatible with the microphone jack.
You may verify at Toshiba's C655 website. It says "No Webcam and microphone built into LCD bezel".
Compared with the L670. It says "Webcam and microphone built into LCD bezel".
I hope this answers your question.
Sincerely, Nathan Hicks

Do my laptop have a mic toshiba satellite c655

There are different models of Toshiba Satellite C655 (about 9 models) and some have webcam and microphone built into LCD bezel (like Satellite C655-S5052 or Satellite C655-S5113) and some don't (like Satellite C655-S5068 and Satellite C655-S5049).

Got a question, if my Toshiba computer does not have a camera it means it has no microphone?

Not necessarily. If it's a laptop it could have a built in microphone. Models that are 5 to 6 years old often had built in microphones but didn't have cameras as this was before skype. If it's a laptop you'll see a small hole, like a pin hole, in the case, near the front, which would be the microphone.

If it's a desktop the microphone plugs in to the soundcard and it's unlikely to have a built in one.

If your computer is new and doesn't have a camera then it probably doesn't have a microphone either.

I have a Shure PG48 and I can't hear anything when I speak into it even though it sounds like it's turning on when I hit the 'on' switch

That's really hard to diagnose over email with this description. I suggest calling Shure Applications at 800-516-2525. They can help you troubleshoot and ask any questions that might help in determining the problem.

I have a Toshiba Laptop PC. It is a Satellite Pro L300 Series. I wonder if it has a built in microphone so that I can add a voice/music clip to my power point slides. I do not have a separate...

Most laptops do have Microphones built in. I do not know for definate that your laptop does, but you can easily test it to find out.

1. Go to the volume control (double click the speaker icon near the clock on the taskbar), go to recording properties and select microphone as the recording source and set the slider to about 80%.

2. Bring up microsoft sound recorder (its in the start menu somewhere) and click record... when you speak you should see a voice print appear in the sound recorder window.

If you do not see a voiceprint, then you probably dont have a built in microphone, but if you do see a voiceprint as you speak then you do have a microphone built in and you can record into your powerpoint shows to your hearts content.

Hope this helps!

The problem seems to be with your friend's setup, and possibly yours. Try adjusting mic levels and volume levels to where they don't interfere with each other. Ex.--you talk , they hear you at a volume that is too loud and it gets into their mic, creating a You do the same too. Trial and error. Hope this is helpful.

My built in microphone is not working properly,

Have you looked into the settings inside windows at all? You can adjust the input levels and that might help.

Toshiba laptop Microphone Not working or Non-existant?

Click Start/All Programs/Accessories/Sound Recorder. Click Start Recording and talk to your computer in a normal voice. When you finish click Stop Recording. Type in a file name and click save. Open the file and play it. If it works you have a built in mike, otherwise buy yourself an external, which I recommend anyway, because the built in mikes are generally not good enough for voice recognition or VOIP.
