If you can't adjust the recording level of your microfon, and it won't shut off, try downloading and installing the original drivers for your soundcard.

There are two obvious reasons (and a number of not-so obvious ones) for this.
1. Have you got your sound on (and adjusted properly) ? You might have your sound turned down or off on your PC or just within Skype. To test if your sound is working, try making a test call using the Skype test call facility.
2. Your friend's microphone may not be working, they may not have one or its sensitivity in Skype may be turned down or it may be 'muted'. Ask to check that her microphone is not muted. Ask her to make a test call on Skype and adjust her microphone sensitivity so that she can hear herself sensibly.
On my version of Skype the test call has appeared in 'contacts' but now it is accessible from the menu at the top left of the window from the call > audio settings menu/page. You can change your volume, microphone and speaker sensitivity settings on that page. You may have a different version of Skype of course.
Make sure you have installed the Acer's audio driver for your model laptop. Test the audio by playing a music CD. Sometimes programs like Skype will lose the Mic settings and chose another input channel. Check your operating system's audio settings under something similar to "Recording" and see if microphone is checkboxed and turned up. Also, make sure it is not muted on Skype and/or the operating system.
If you have Windows XP, for example, look for the audio settings icon (little speaker) just left of clock area. Open and go to "options". Choose "properties" then "Recording". Look that your microphone is "Selected" with a checkbox and is turned up. To hear yourself during this, you will need to go back and choose "Playback" instead of "Recording" and de-select "mute" (if checked) for microphone and turn it up to see if you hear yourself talking over the speakers/headphones.
Also, check the Skype settings for microphone and that Skype has the correct sound device selected for input - being your microphone and not another device.
Also make sure that there is not a manual, physical volume adjustment for the microphone on the laptop case itself. Could even be a mute button.
You need to check the Microphone setting in Skype.
Open Skype, Click on Tools - Audio Settings, then in Microphone settings click the down arrow and select the built-in microphone then save the settings.
If the microphone you selected doesn't work then select a different one.
