Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

I get a window saying Command line option syntax error.

Hi,
My name is Jay.
I run windows XP home on my dell laptop. I read the N.Y.Times on line and when I click on an article, I get a window saying Command line option syntax error. Type Command /? for Help, which prevents the link from opening. Sometimes, after I click on the articles three times, it opens the link. 99% of the time I am unable to open any links.
I would greatly appreciate your help.
Thank you and Happy N.Y.
Jay Martin

Hi! I think you are using internet explorer 6.0 then upgrade it to internet explorer 7.0 or later. Delete temporary internet files, History and Cookies from internet properties in control panel. If this is not the case try uninstalling and re-installing internet explorer.

And if still unsuccessful then using Mozilla Firefox web browser will certainly solve your concern.

You can download Mozilla Firefox from the following link -

Hi i forgot my users password an i cant reestart the laptop its a dell laptop windows7 home premium can u help me restart the computer

There are 3 options for your problem:
1. You can boot to WinRE(Windows Recovery Console), run the command prompt. Go to the WINDOWS directory. Rename magnify.exe to magnify.old. Rename cmd.exe to magnify.exe. Restart your computer and boot normally. On the log in screen, click on Ease of Access. Select the option for magnifier. It will open command prompt instead of magnifier. Type the command: control userpasswords2. It will give you the option to reset the password.

2. Run in safe mode. Log in using the profile Administrator. Go to control panel then user accounts. You can change the password of your profile.

3. Dell systems have the built-in factory image restore. It can be found in the WinRE. To go to WinRE, turn system off, power on computer, after pressing the power button, tap on F8 till it gives you a screen that says Advanced Boot Options. Select Repair your Computer. Click on a few things for the language. Then you will have a window that says Windows Recovery Console. Click on Dell Factory Image Restore. Then there you go! it will restore the system back to its factory settings.

Hope this helps!

Can you correct my error message? command line option SYNTAX ERROR I get this message when I try to open a pps file. I have Microsoft Power Point installed on the computer. Thea.

In computer science a syntax error ( IPA: /ˈsɪntæks ɛrə(ɹ)/ ) refers to an error in the syntax of a sequence of characters or tokens that is intended to be written in a particular programming language.
For compiled languages syntax errors occur strictly at compile-time. A program will not compile until all syntax errors are corrected. For interpreted languages however syntax errors cannot be detected until runtime and it is not necessarily simple to differentiate a syntax error from a semantic error.
A syntax error may also occur when an invalid equation is entered into a calculator. This can be caused, for instance, by opening brackets without closing them, or less commonly, entering several decimal points in one number.

I have a shortcut to an internet site that has somehow had its name changed to a line of ??????? ? ?????????. The computer will not allow me to delete it, stating "the file name or directory name or volume...

run a check disk first, those kind of names is not allowed in windows, so it should pop up some error.
in msdos command prompt:
chkdsk C: /F
(assuming it is in drive C)
It should give you an error, saying the volume is locked, so you need to reboot, during the reboot, it will check the file system.
Still in command prompt, just try to delete the file using:
del "??????????" /F/S/Q
USE the quotes please, or it won't work.

OR... the hardway ;) get a Linux Live CD, mount the filesystem, and delete the file.

Command line option syntax error - Outlook back up

Download and install 7 zip from 7zip.org. Install it and right click on the downloaded pfbackup.exe and click on Extract in the context menu. Choose the folder to extract. In the destination folder u can find two files Launcher.exe and pfbackup.msi. Double click on the msi file and u can start the installation.

If you have any error while extracting the archive, download a new copy of pfbackup and follow the same procedure.

Syntax error on Boot Up

Attempt to boot the machine in Safe-Mode.

While powering up continuously hit F8.

You will get a Boot Option Menu

Select Safe-Mode boot

Often times drivers, or system files may be "lost" or referenced wrong, and booting into safe-mode can solve the issues, sometimes.

Check in the Device Manager for any conflicts if you are able to get into Safe-Mode.

Note any Red X or ! symbols near any devices and their names. You will have to reinstall the drivers for these devices. Consult the machines manufacturer website for downloads and support for any devices listed.

Let us know the results.
Good Luck

BLUE SCREEN W/ MESSAGE STOP: C000007B BAD IMAGE.

Try to look for your windows xp cd.
Turn the computer off. Restart it and start tapping f12 right after.
Insert the cd. Choose the option that says CD/CDRW/DVDRW from the screen and press enter. Watch out for a prompt that will say 'Press any key to boot from cd'. press any key as soon as you get this. If you miss it, you'll get the error again. You should get the blue windows setup screen if you caught it at the right time.
Wait until you get the 'welcome to setup' screen.
Press R.
Follow any other instructions that you may get until it gives you the C:\> prompt.
Type in bootcfg /rebuild.

Below is a listing of the common steps you are likely going to encounter.

* Prompt for the identified versions of Windows installed. When you receive this prompt press Y if the bootcfg command properly identified each of the Windows operating systems installed on the computer. It is important to realize this command will only detect Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT installations.

* Prompt to enter the load identifier. This is the name of the operating system for the boot.ini. For example, Microsoft Windows XP Home users would enter "Microsoft Windows XP Home edition". If you have Windowx XP pro edition, enter 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional'

* Prompt to Enter OS load options. When this prompt is received type /fastdetect to automatically detect the available options.
Then type 'exit'. and let the computer reboot. If you get two options for microsoft windows. Choose the one that says what you entered when you were in the recovery console.

If you are able to boot correctly after those steps, go to start>click run. Then type msconfig. Click ok. Click the boot.ini tab. Click 'check all boot paths'. Click ok or yes. click close and restart if prompted. You shouldn't get the prompt for two microsoft windows anymore.
