Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a winfast 761GXK8MC motherboard. I am using a athlon 2800 CPU, and a SATA hard drive. when I install windows 98 it keeps locking up. then it says "child devices are keeping it from fully starting up" I shut it down and restart in safe mode. if I go to file system properties in the system (Control Panel) and (disable all 32 bit protected mode disk drivers) this is the only way it will boot correctly. but I lose my cd drives it does not even recognize them and I cannot install anything else is there an update for this and how can i install them if i cannot use the cd drives.

I doubt sata technology is supported by windows 98, you need to use windows 2000 at least. microsoft, unfortunately, does not support windows 98 anymore. the only other option is for you to check on your motherboard's manufacturer's website for windows 98 drivers. you could also try ide cd drives.

Windows 98 does not support SATA very well, the technology did not exist when the OS was created. Change to Windows XP and you will find it works well.

Compatible CPU

check the winfast website for a cpu support list for your model of motherboard, that will tell you if it supports it and ALSO if you need to update the bios to support later cpu's, i'd imagine your using the old socket A standard, see if your motherboard is listed here> http://www.leadtek.com/eng/mainboard/default.asp?lineid=3&seriesid=23&chipseriesid=15 (this is what is now listed in google as winfast and does show winfast boards), please advise if you get stuck anymore.

Disk boot failure when I installed a new SATA DVD writer

Start the system & enter you're bios & use you're manual to help guide you on this. Go to the Boot section of the bios. You can set the boot order. Normal boot order is like this:
1st boot device, floppy disk (if one is connected).
2nd boot device, cdrom drive
3rd boot device, hard drive
(Drive the has windows installed on it).
Save & exit the bios. The system will restart & windows should load. If it does not, than you picked the wrong hard drive.

Good luck!

Bios reads wrong speed

you have to find in yor bios the section where to change the fsb and multiplicator factor of the cpu.I had same problem with an athlon 2400++...you have to upgrade it from 100 to 133 or 166 depending the case.
its   a simple routine work..just find the section in bios...explore it look for this cpu options..I cant tell you exactly where in bios because the bios version is differen from board to board..

and for the second problem
you have to make the hard with windows a bootable option
you may do this from bios too oor from the cable coneting the hdd with the mainboard...options slave/master.cable select..
however you have to set it like:"boot from...." from the bios

good luck .tell me how it worked
bye
