1. Check for chipset names that are INTEL, NEC, etc. These are compatible chipsets with the devices.
2. If you have a chipset name that contains SiS, Via, OpenHCD, Ali, or Alr,
these chipsets are not compatible with the devices and may not allow the USB Card Programmer to function.

try to press the reset button on the left side next to the usb port with a small paper clip or toothpick and see what happens and chk on the magellan website to see for firmware update if it is do it and plug in powersupply and the usb and leave it alone and let it reset a few times until it says to unplug from the usb .also make sure it has a flash sd card in it so you do not lose your addresses.let me know what happens.

When you connect your Magellan to a PC via the
USB cable, it is very important that you go through the “Unplug or Eject
Hardware” in order to correctly disconnect this and any other USB flash drive.

    A.
    Backup Your
    Magellan 3100

    1. Turn on the 3100 and connect it to the
computer using the USB cable (included in the package). (I did not load
Magellan’s software from the included disk.)

    2. The 3100 shows up as a flash drive. Mine is
assigned as the F drive. I’ll use F drive in the following steps.
Substitute it with the actual drive letter of your system.

    3. Back up all of the files on the F drive. Keep
them in a safe place in case you make any mistakes or want to return the
      3100 to its original configuration.

    Move the Map Files
    to a SD Card

    1. Buy a 2 GB or maybe bigger SD card. The
Magellan documentation is not specific on the maximum size that the 3100
can handle or if the card has to be formatted before it is put into the
3100. Anyway, I am using a 2 GB SD card that I had formatted as FAT. (The
“Backup” command saves some of the files from the F:\USR subdirectory into
a subdirectory, “\backup”, on the SD card.)

    2. Turn on the 3100 and connect it to the
      computer using the USB cable.

    3. Now, the 3100 shows up as two flash drives. On
mine the F drive was the same as before and the SD card showed up as the G
      drive.

    4. Make a subdirectory called “MAP” on the G
      drive (the SD card).

    5. Copy all of the files form the F drive (the
3100’s main flash drive) to the MAP subdirectory on the SD card. There
      should be four (4) files:

    a. Index.mct

    b. NRBM_NA.MGI

    c. US48.IMI

    d. US48_POI.POI

    The
main map file, US48.IMI, is 906 MB all by itself.

    1. Copy F:\APP\Media.cfg to Media.cfg.org or
something similar to make a good backup copy.

    2. Using your favorite editor, modify the
Media.cfg file. Change the text that has “\HDD\MAP” to “\SDMMC
Card\MAP” in three (3) locations. Note the space between SDMMC and
Card. In this document I have put in a non-breaking space, so copy and
past may not work. I have put a copy of my modified Media.cfg file here
      (right click and save):

    http://goeken.homedns.org/Weather/Magell...

    1. Disconnect the 3100. The device should soft
      reset automatically.

    2. Verify that the 3100 is functioning
correctly. You may have to use the paper clip to reset.

    3. Turn the 3100 off. Remove the SD memory
card. Power the 3100 back on. A popup error should say “Map Initialization
Status: Please insert SD Card with map”.

    4. Turn the 3100 off. Inset the SD card and
      power the 3100 back on.

    5. Verify that your 3100 is functioning
      correctly.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, when an update is initiated:

  • the update process basically erases the existing files on the unit;
  • and then installs new files.
On instances as described above, when the update is somehow interrupted, what is left is a hardware device with no firmware. It has lost its operating system. Technically it is now a "brick". Possible workaround:
  • if you have a backed up the unit prior to the update, then copy the files back which includes the O/S files & ID file, SN number. The map files are not necessary;
  • try the update again;
  • a copy of the ID file exists in the SD card but the other basic files are not;
  • consider a warranty if the unit was purchased new and within the 12 months warranty period.
An alternative is to "borrow" an identical brand/model and back that up and restore to your Magellan.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

hi simple181

you can if your computer can still see your gps and if you backed up your files before you did the update. if not, i do have the files, but your computer needs to see your 3100 and you need to do a few things before you start.

its alittle nerve racking if your computer cant see your gps, specifically the tfat (not the sd card)

#1 does your computer see your 3100

Blue Screen with a black progress bar

i asked yesterday what for error message were you getting, but you havent replied so maybe you missed it. the dos box you are refering to is part of the update process for the 3100. run the update again and be patient, this update is huge and takes about 30-45 minutes to complete.do not remove usb cable untill directed to do so then the unit will reboot numerous times to install the update. do not attempt to touch the gps until you see the screen with the time zone. if that fail hopefully you copied the files before you tried to update it. if the update fails again, let me know and ill show you how to restore your 3100

Hi My Magellan Maestro powers up with the Magellan screen and the bar scrolls but thats all it does? Carl Lucas Aberdeen MD

i just replied to a fellow with the same problem and since your problem is same, ill post what i wrote him/her but try a hard reset 1st..turn the gps on then locate the little pin hole on the side, using a paper clip, push reset....if that fails, try the 2.18 update if you havent already.

updates for any magellan can be found HERE
but read below first before getting the update

i cant stress enough that patients is a must here. this update is huge 1.75GB

follow the instructions below whether you have updated your gps already or not!

There are few ways to solve this problem. i assume you installed the 2.18 update for the 3100 and assuming you tried the reset already, try and run the update again and follow the directions to the letter..make sure the battery is fully charged (i also keep mine plugged in if the update doesnt say not to) and do not try and run the update across a network. this update is huge 1.75GB and can take an hour or so depending on the computer..do not interrupt the update process. if you do not have the 2.18 update read me file, i can try and post it here, but its in PDF and dont think i can post that

if all else fails, magellan will fix or replace for free any of there gps that were rendered inoperable due to one of there updates.

either solution will work but magellans going to tell you to run the update again anyway before sending it back.

i gave you the 2 easyest ways to fix it,but
there are other ways to get it running again, but if your not comfortable copying and moving files...youll make it even worst then it is.

hope this helps.

Magellan Maestro 3100 stuck on

If you followed the procedure closely, you now have an SD card with your backup on it. The backup consists of two folders: BACKUP, and USBTRANS. Insert the backup SD card in your PC's reader slot and open a "file explorer" aka "Windows Explorer", not to be confused with "Internet Explorer". You will use Windows Explorer to click and drag the USBRANS folder to the Maestro.

With the Maestro 3100 connected to the PC, a couple of Explorer folders will open and you can see the file structure for the GPS in 1, and in the other one a separate file structure for the blank SD card needed for the update. Look at the file structure for the GPS and you should see a handful of folders including "SYS".

  • Start the upgrade program, following the procedures.
  • Click the NEXT button at the bottom of the procedures screen.
  • Immediately copy the backed up USBTRANS folder (and all contents) to the SYS folder on the GPS.
  • The update should now find the Maestro 3100 and proceed with the update.

SUMMARY: copy USBTRANS (it should contain 1 file: UNIT.DAT)
  • from your BACKUP SD card (not the one in the Maestro)
  • to your Maestro 3100's SYS folder.
