Automatic backup doesn't actually backup

I have a new Toshiba Satellite A305 configured for daily automatic backups. They do occur but nothing is actually backed up... that is, new documents, for instance, on the desktop do NOT show up in the external HD to which the backup is directed. I have followed all the steps outlined in the control panel for backups.

I overlooked mentioning that I am using Windows Visa Home Premium operating system.

  • vhovanec Dec 27, 2008

First suggestion was for a Windows XP system whereas I have Windows Visa Home Premium, backup instructions for which I have followed successfully. Backups performed daily but no new or edited documents from desktop are actually backed up.

Complete Backup program, as suggested, is not available with Windows Visa Home Premium which I have, nor would it allow me to backup individual files.

I followed your advice, and in the services.msc screen, changed the "Manual" backup to "Automatic" and ensured that the status read "started." The backup was performed, at least according to what the screen said, but a test Word document on the desktop was not backed up to my external HD.

So what I have, it appears, is a Windows Visa Home Premium automatic backup that says it is backing up, but fails to backup a test Word doc on the desktop.

Check the service for automatic backup program is set to automatic and the status is "Started" using Start > Run > services.msc. Check for the backup program service. The status should be "Stated "
If you don't find Run .You can start it using " Windows key + R key"

Hi, why don't you copy the files yourself into the external hard drive? is dayly backup required? unless you drop the laptop dataloss is quite rare. Simply copy the files yourself into the external hard drive and you will be fine.

Go back to the backup options, on control panel, and select manually the folders to backup, then save.

For example, on Windows xp, after setting up a general backup, you can decide which folders to back up:

It works on a similar way on Vista.

    See here on XP

Ensure that the document on the desktop was not just a link to a document stored elsewhere.

If the backup stored other documents on the desktop, that is the only explanation.

Otherwise, ensure that you included desktop on backup settings.

My Toshiba Satellite A305-S6858 keeps restarting when it is plugged in to charge. I have no problem running the laptop on battery Also, when plugged in and I boot in safe mode the problem does not occur....

On the computer manager, go to the device manager and disable the processors. It worked for me like a charm after several attempts to restore it to original settings and formatting the hard drive. It doesn't affect performance, it seems to be more a failure of the drivers than the hardware.

What do I need to back up My toshiba satellite L455. Computers don't come with cd's or disks any more with purchase?

Since you have Win 7 Home Premium, start with making a System Repair disc. You just need a blank CD-R or DVD+/-R (DL is OK, but not an R/W disc). Click Start > Maintenance > Create a System Repair Disc. (This will save you from needing a OS install disc in the future)

Next you can use the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator to create a set of backup discs for the initial configuration of the computer. (Use DVDs for this to avoid needing lots of discs.) This lets you make one copy of the Media - no chance to update for new drivers or any other information.

You can save your files with the Backup and Restore (in the same Maintenance files as the System Repair disc). With Home Premium this only works with an locally attached external hard drive.

If you need a complete backup after this, you will need third party software. Some external drives come with the software. Norton Ghost, Paragon Backup and Recovery, and Acronis True Image will all do a full backup to CD, DVD or external drive; there are others. Most of these will make incremental updates as well. There are a few free packages but those don't have the features of the above (like recovering just one file if needed).

I hope this helps.

My satellite A305 won't recognize the internet. The message I receive is "the dependency service or group failed to start."

If you are trying wireless then please go to run option and type services.msc
There will find one service as wireless zero configuration, double click and enable it.

Thanks

You can reset the BIOS back to the default setting by going into the BIOS configuration and there should be a setting "Load default settings" then save and exit.
The other way to reset the BIOS is to remove the BIOS battery, wait 1/2 hour, insert the battery, then go into the BIOS configuration and set the Date & Time etc.
