Question about Brother MFC-440CN InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Only black cartridge empty, but 3 full color crtrige say empty

Brother multifuntion printer 440cn. The black ink cartridge is the only cartridge used, but when it says empty and I replace it, the printer will not continue to work until I replace all the other three colors. The other colors are full and unused, but they say empty, oone after the other. This is wasteful and expensive. How can I replace the black cartridge only?

Remove the color cartridges. On one end you can see the opaque
ink tank inside the main cart. housing. Cut a piece of black electrical
tape to fit around the three sides visible of the ink tank. Make sure the tape fits inside the housing and adheres to the tank itself. This makes the printer think your ink is always full but you can always tell when you need to refill/replace the ink(right?). Good Luck!

Indicates black ink empty when its not.

Try removing the cartridge and shaking it. Brother printers use an optical ink monitor with a float inside the cartridge. The float can get stuck sometimes and indicate incorrect ink level.
But keep in mind that printers often indicate 'empty' (on purpose) while there is still bit of ink left in the cartridge, to prevent running out of ink during printing. If shaking doesn't help, replace the cartridge.

I am tired of this mfc 440cn not printing in black only mode if the colors are empty, even one. I want to print and work with the black only cartridge. How can I get it to print in that mode only. ie: ...

Yes! There is a way around the problem. On each ink cartridge there is a narrow section that a sensor in the printer reads to decide when the ink is low. Cover that spot with a piece of black electrical tape to fool the sensor and you can keep printing. This page has good pictures showing what to do.

I have a brother MFC-490CW and replaced the black ink, and my color ink has run out. It will not let me print as it says ink is low, so it won't even let me use the black? How do I print with only using...

By design, Brother printers stop all printing when one of the cartridges is empty. This is done to avoid cleaning cycles sucking air into the system, which could possibly damage the printhead.

Even if you print in black only by changing the print settings to "Mono" or "Grayscale" to avoid printing in color, cleaning cycles would still **** air from the empty color cartridge because they are programmed to clean ALL the ink nozzles. The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge(s).

After replacing the empty color cartridge, you could print in "Mono" or "Grayscale" to make better use of just the black ink.

Black Ink wont work.

I would take the ink cartridge out, grab some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, and wipe the bottom of the cartridge where the ink gets dispersed. You should see color on the q-tip after just a few swipes. Return cartridge back into printer and give it a go!!

Please be sure to rate this solution.
