Re: AVI file is not running

With .avi files the issue is usually which video codec has been used to encode it - all players will have certain codecs installed, and if the second player you describe does not have the approprtiate codec then it will struggle to play the file - occasionally the audio codecs can have the same effect, also on video. In your video conversion program you should be able to choose from a list of codecs to use to encode the .avi file, check which one you used and then check it is installed on the computer that is experiencing the problem. Windows media player, if it is fully updated should be able to cope with the majority of codecs, the best player for .avi files at the moment is DivX player, available free for download at; divx player also may need to be fully updated after you install it, this is an easy procedure, just click "Check for new versions" in the "help" menu to make sure you have the latest divx codecs installed Hopefully this will allow you to play the files on both machines. If you still have trouble, then type the name of the codec used by your converter program into a search engine, and you should find a location to download it from with installation instructions. Hope this helps, ask again if you still have trouble :)

My Philips Portable DVD Player dont read avi files, how can I write my avi files to dvd discs to be readable.

Get a DVD burner program, like Nero, then follow the directions.

If you're running Windows, you can download Windows Live Movie Maker, if it's not already on your computer, and use it to convert the AVI's to DVD.

How to convert XVID VBR MP3 and DIVX CBR MP3 using ConvertXtoDVD

Most Philips DVD players with DivX will play Stage 6 or VOD MP4 Video files if the FOURCC is set to DX50 or DIVX and the MP3 or AC3 audio is at a constant bitrate CBR of at least 192kbps, this is also the DVD Video audio standard in AC3, DTS or LPCM.

However with either DivX OR XviD video with VBR MP3 audio you will experience audio lag on playback the trick is to get the audio track in to a constant bitrate CBR and if possible with the audio frames Aligned on the interleaves as opposed to Split across interleaves.

If you plan on keeping the video in MP4 AVI v2.0 format then you MUST convert the audio to a CBR in either MP3 or AC3 format using one of the methods shown HERE.

If you plan on converting the MP4 video into DVD format you can first try to use the excellent ConvertXtoDVD this will attempt to convert the audio track into 192kbps CBR dolby digital AC3 audio whatever the source AVI audio.

If this fails to give you DVD Video without audio sync problems then you must convert the MP4 to a CBR audio and a FOURCC of DX50 to ensure Home Theatre compatibility.

I have some movies (format *.avi) that I cannot see (I can hear the sound, though) when I attempt to play once burned as data on a DVD. The message says "video codec not available". I made those movies...

Hello Aristica,
There is No software download for the DVD plaer itself. Where you are going wrong is the Format ie avi that DVD player does not support it. You can Google free software to download which will allow you to convert you AVI file to something that the Dvd player will play:

DVD Video • VCD • SVCD • DVD-R • DVD-RW • DVD+R • DVD+RW • CD (Audio) • CD-R • CD-RW • Picture CD • Divx

so If you type in Google free Avi converter Then this will list several. You really want one that will convert to DIVX or VOB those will definately play on your DVD player.

I hope this has help you out. I tryed not to go into too much detail.

Go to and
download the Rad Videotools. This little program helps you convert

I want to convert an avi extension video file to wmv

"will converting an avi extension file to wmv make it work on a dvd player??"

No, a DVD player uses .VOB files

"I have a Philips GoGear SA 3020 and it only supports wmv files. Can I somehow convert an avi extension to wmv?"

Your device is only 2GB so it won't hold a lot of video content but wmv files are generally smaller then .avi.

Go to

That will give you a place to start. Have fun :)

Sony CD/DVD Player DVP-NS50P not playing my avi files DVD+RW

You need to convert avi files to dvd format before burning, otherwise the player won't recognize them. Google "avi to dvd" and you'll find a number of free or pay programs that will do the conversion for you.

You need to convert the .avi files to the MPEG format with software. Just renaming the file will not work.
