Question about RCA D52W19 52" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Stretching issue Hi guys, I have a compound problem for you, and I tend to be wordy (sorry). First off, I bought my TV without the original remote or manual, so I don't know how to (or if I even can) change the stretch mode. Basically, when viewing a 16 x 9 DVD, the picture appears stretched vertically in the center. It seems to be using the 4x3 stretch mode (which looks fantastic on my dish signal) on a 16x9 signal. I was under the impression that you could not configure the picture mode for a component input, so is this actually a screen problem? Is there a service mode type adjustment to be made, or do I just need to hit a special button on the original remote? Also, and most likely related, upon warming up for several minutes the TV makes a horrible high-frequency whine (70% of the time or so) that lasts about a minute and a half. I was hoping it was a dried capacitor making 20 kHz switch noise, but no caps show bulging or rupture. It is such a piercing, and overwhelming sound, I can't start to pinpoint the origin. Occasionally, the whine oscillates in frequency a bit, and the picture width oscillates with it. I was told it was likely the flyback, but I thought the flyback ran off the HOT, and a horizontally oscillating picture would be a funky HOT output right? A bad HOT output could actually explain the problem above. Could the HOT's source voltage be oscillating? Oh yeah, the whine will sometimes go away after a solid bang.... Not good practice, but diagnostically significant. So basically, where would the whine be coming from, and how do I get my DVD picture to not look "skinny" in the middle?

You will have the ability to switch formats in component video but it may require the original remote, most of the RCA's have a format button. You may also be able to find it in the menu. The high pitched noise sound to me more like a transformer than a cap the FLY is definatly a possibilty but really so is just about every transformer/coil in the thing. The good news is if you can smack it, it s probably just a connection on one of transformers or coils. I'd gently press on them untill you find the one that is sensitve and resolder it, it can be the transformer itself in which case you can sometimes seal them with silicone but more likely must replace it. You should probably let a Pro look at this though because there is a lot of high voltage in there, be careful!

Hi. This is a common problem with non-original remotes. They lack special buttons for typical actions. Sorry, that's how it is. Try to get an original one.
