I had a similar problem. If you are going by what the sheet that comes in the package, it is completely ambigous as how to install the software to be able to connect it to your PC. Without Media player running. connect the device using the suppied USB highspped port. when you do it shoud power up, and it shows a little monitor and USB icon on the display. At this moment your computer is trying to recognize it as a portable media player, However when you press and hold the power button you will see a small blue sqare appear in the lower corner of the scren. If you can see it, is say USB mode. That means that the mode between Mass Storage drive, and portable media player is toggled by holding and releasing the power button just long enough to swith modes, but I found if you hold the button down a little too long, you will see the small blue square, appear and dissappear again. With a little practice you will be able to get the mode to swich and the blue USB square will stay on the screen of the device, At which time you are in MSC mode. You should be able to open "My Computer" and look at all of the available devices, odds are that you will notice the portable device named GPX just dissappeared and doesn't seem to come back. But look a little higher and you will see a new unknown mass storage device, and here is the real trick. There will also be a Disc drive that looks like a virtual CD drive. It should be named tools. Open that disc, and its folder and you will find the setup.exe application. Once you run that and it installs its applications and drivers. Disconnect the device, open your Media Player program you are hoping to sync with reconnect the usb cable and it should be right there for you.

1. Connect your ML648B to your computer with Windows XP or later.
2. By default your computer will recognize ML648B as GPX MTP Device. (Wait for few seconds to a minute allowing your Windows computer to recognize and install necessary drivers for the device for first time as MTP Device.)
3. Press the POWER button from top of your ML648B, to change it to USB mode connection. You will also see USB on the screen of ML648B. (Wait for few seconds to a minute allowing your Windows computer to recognize and install necessary drivers for the device for first time as USB device.)
4. ML648B will now mount 2 drives, one as Tools (as CD-Drive) and second as Removable Disk (Drive) – under My Computer on your Windows Desktop.
5. Double click & open Tools, and run Setup.exe to start installing Video Conversion Software tool.
6. Select defaults options and finish the installation by clicking on Close or Finish.
7. If asked, click on Continue Anyway on Windows XP or Install this driver software anyway on Windows Vista.

A friend gave me his gpx do i need software to install on pc?

I don't think you should require anything. When you plug it in via the USB cord it should automatically install the necessary drivers. You will need Windows Media Player 10 or higher to load songs onto it though.

GPX ML648B Will not hold charge

The Player gets it's charge from the USB port. I would recommend plugging your Player in and leave your computer on overnight.
If your player still does not retain a charge, I would contact the manufacturer.

Charging my gpx ML638B

It will if it is a mini-USB plug. The mp3 has the mini-USB cord bundled, and can be used with anything with a mini-USB port. My cell has the same port, so I can charge it on the PC like the mp3, and can use the wall socket charger for the phone on the mp3.
