Windows likes to mess with drive letters. Try this:

  1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

Note If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, go to step 3. Performance and Maintenance appears in Control Panel only if you use Category view. If you use Classic view, Performance and Maintenance does not appear.
  3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.
  4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, and then either accept the default drive letter or click the drive letter that you want to use.
  7. Click OK.
I'm pretty sure this will fix the problem. If not try us again at Fixya.com

My computer recognizes my wd external hardrive but says it cant fin the necessary software

Right-click My Computer and go to Manage Computer. Then, click Disk Management. You will see the different partitions of the disk labeled by alphabet characters. Click on the partition associated with your external drive and then just change the character to any alphabet character that's aren't used as labels.

Your external hard drive has no partitions so Windows has no drive to mount. Follow these steps to create and format a partition for your external hard drive.

1. Press Win+R to open the Run command.
2. Type "Control" into the dialog box.
3. Double-click Administrative Tools.
4. Double-click Computer Management.
5. Select Disk Management under Storage.
6. Find the 250 GB External Hard drive in the right pane.
7. Right click on the drive and select "Create new partition".
8. After the partition is created you will need to format the partition.
9. Format the partition as NTFS unless you plan on booting off the hard drive, in which case format the partition as FAT32. You can also create multiple partitions if you want.
10. Enter My Computer and you will now see your external hdd.

If your HDD is brand new, maybe it is not formatted yet. Goto Control panel>Adminitrative tools>Computer management>Disk management. be sure not to mess with your fixed hard drives. Scroll down to to find the drive that is unpartioned. Right click and select make new partition. Follow the instructions of the wizard until the drive is partitioned and formatted.

This should solve your problem.

My segate 300Gb HDD keeps asking to format it when i recently pluged it into a new computer to transfer data to and it said that the driver didnt install correctly. since then it keeps asking to forma

I'm assuming that this was functioning at one point. If you are using Windows, Right click on my computer and click "Manage" Then go to disk management? Does it see the drive at all. If so, has a letter been assigned? It is possible that the operating system will show the drive even if it can't read the data. Look to see what file system and how it sees the disk having been partitioned. It is possible that your partition table has been corrupted. This can possibly be fixed using a tool like disk doctor or fdisk.

If, on the other hand, the drive is also making funny noises, you may have a mechanical failure on the drive.

External hdd not detected in my computer but is in device manager

You probably still need to partition it, before you can even format it.
Try the disk manager in Windows.

In the start menu, right-click "My Computer" and in the popup menu, select "Manage".
One computer management comes up, select disk management and there you should see the disk. You can then create a partition and format it.

No external hardrive recognition

It could be that the drive is not formatted/Initialized as yet! Right click on "My Computer" the click on "Manage". Go to(click on) "Disk Management". If the initialize disk wizard comes up automatically then just follow the wizard cause that means your disk needs to be initialized. On the right pane you should see all the disks and their status. It could be that your disk is un allocated. Look for the disk that is full black(black means unallocated), right click on the disk and click on "Create Partition" Follow the steps of the Create Partition Wizard( It will give you the option to format, DO THAT! If when you right on the disk and all that shows is "Initialize", then do that! and go back and create the partition! Hopefully that should do the trick!
