R31 IBM ThinkPad won't start with new battery

My ThinkPad laptop has Windows XP loaded and I just bought a new battery for it. With the old battery, and now the new one, the TP will not start unless the power adapter is plugged in.
Once the unit is running, it works fine with battery power.
More detail: Unit tries to start with two green lights - power and battery on. Hard drive light blinks on then goes out. Before the screen lights up, the machine shuts off.

A suggestion was to "try to pop the battery pack out with only the cable pluged in try to start computer and get to main loggin menu start it up on the cable power then put battery pack back in and remove the cable and go to start menu and click on reset hope this helps"

I tried the above, but not being a regular PC user, I don't see "Reset" in the Start Menu. Can I get a clarification on this?

Ibm thinkpad r31 windows vista video drivers

The OS will ,USUALLY, apply a generic driver to the Graphics Adapter, and most essential components. Not always, but usually, when it boots the first thing you do is Windows Updates. You may have problems with some hardware when doing a OS upgrade. It can be tricky. If, say, you jump from XP to 7, you may be able to use vista drivers. Your in luck, on the ThinkPad R31 support website Vista and Win 7 drivers are available, SEE: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT072387 Go with Win 7, if you have that option.

I just bought a replacement battery for my IBM Thinkpad R40 but the computer acts like it does not recognize the battery. Can you help?

Go to devices manager and see if the battery drivers are listed there,if no,then you will need to look at the make or serial number of your battery and download the drivers:)..that`s how your laptop knows it is there:)

DVD

Hi,
I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
Good luck
