Question about Fujitsu Siemens LIFEBOOK C6387 (FKR-C6387-005) PC Notebook

1 Answer

Fujitsu C6387 slow to start

I have a fujitsu Siemens C6387 laptop which takes an age to start up. I dont mean the windows part of it, the first screen loads and has prompts at the bottom for boot list and bios settings etc, and then it does nothing for 5 minutes or more, then it loads windows in a reasonable time. the problem must be something to do with the motherboard or the bios but i cant think what!! I have never come across a computer which takes this long to get to the point of loading and my first computer was an ibm XT 20 yrs ago. Can anyone help please?

surely safe mode (f8) is part of the windows thing? it loads windows fine, its the 5 minutes it takes to get there thats the problem. the situation is exactly the same when booting up to floppy or cd, including booting from linux

    any other suggestions?

thanks but there ias little difference in the speed with which windows loads eithr normally or in safemode so i guess it must be hardware, but which bit? i have tried disabling things in the bios but it makes no difference.
What exactly does windows check once it has checked the memory, the hard drive, and the mouse?

What may well be happening is that a peice of hardware, eg usb ports, network adapter, graphics driver or similair is struggling to find the driver for it and is hanging the boot up. It could also be a memory failure or a bios failure as the memory used by your system takes over after the first 64KB of built in bios memory. Start your laptop in safe mode (press F8) on start up, as this will load up with only the needed drivers, if it boots up quicker it may well a driver fault, it is then a process of illimination.

the point i was trying to get across is that when the bios has finished the initial checks, Windows takes over and loads all the drivers for all devices before you get to the windows screen, so if you start in safe mode, only the minimum amount of drivers to get windows running start up and if it gets from bios check to windows faster, then you know it is a driver slowing it uo, if not then it is a peice of hardware the bios is looking for before the windows log on screen.

Do you have the eMachines recovery disc? If so, then you need to enter the bios of the laptop by pressing a speciffic key at the start of the boot process. It should tell you what key to press in the POST. Most likely across the bottom of the screen somewhere. The F2 and F10 keys are popular as well as the Delete key. Once you get into the BIOS, Locate the menu containing the boot sequence. Make sure to set the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device. Save the changes and exit the BIOS. Put the Recovery or Windows CD/DVD in the drive and follow the on-screen instructions.
