RCA DWD490RE

RCA DWD490RE

By M0nica L - usenet poster

I just got an DWD490RE ultimate tv satellite receiver.  It has a
s-video in connection as well as the normal s-video out connection.
I've plugged my DVD player into it but I can't figure out how to play
through the receiver.  Has anyone run into this problem?  I'm open to
all advice on how to make it work.

This Problem has been added to the Share Your Expertise Page under "My Work Queue".

When they use the word "ready" here, I suppose they are referring to
future possibilities. They are not capable of this now, so that
statement is misleading.

There's no way to connect them to the outputs or record stuff from
them.

I read somewhere that you can use it and the guy said that you have to use
both s-video and RCA cable to the UTV and again both s-video and RCA cables
to the TV, use the 'Input' button in your remote to toggle.   I haven't
tried since I don't have s-video in my test TV and I am lazy to try it in
the living room.  I double that you can record anything from it but again I
haven't test.....
Good Luck!!

Got this off a web site
Ultimate TV's A/V inputs are ready to ship video and sound clips as
Picture Email to friends and processing labs (for hard copying.) And
who knows, maybe someday you'll also be able to use Ultimate TV's hard
drive to edit home-made videos and music productions.

Where did you get this idea? There's no mention of it (or any other
use for the A/V inputs) in the manual. Are you confusing this with the
RF passthru?

It shouldn't work (since turning the "power" off removes power to the
A/V outputs), and does not work on any other component I know of, but
I tried it anyway. It did NOT work.

What? There's no problem doing that on a ReplayTV.

It's not disabled on ReplayTV or UltimateTV, and even if it was
there's always FORWARD.

I have a UTV and do that on the more offensive commercials.

That would be a S-video OUTPUT, it wouldn't make any sense to connect
that to a DVD player. The question is about the S-video INPUT (maybe
you didn't know the DRD490RE had one?).

Since most TV's only have one s-video input, it supposed to work as a
switch allowing you to add another device to to your s-video
connection.

I just answered that. When I first got a UTV, I spent a lot of time
looking for that switch. The video inputs on the DWD490RE seem to be
completely nonfunctional. The DWD490RE will not record anything other
than the signal from DTV. If you just want it for switching, you need
an external S-video switch.

The S video is so you can plug your box in to a stereo receiver. The
receiver controls all your DVD's VCR Direct TV etc. Works for mine

The video INPUTS on the DWD490RE (UTV) seem to be completely
non-functional. The manual has nothing to say about using them.

UTV cannot record anything other than DTV. If you're just interested
in doing this to be able to switch signals, you can get a seperate
S-video switch (meybe even a remote-controlled one).
