Question about Olympus FE-230 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Camera tuns on extends lens 3 x then turns off

My olympus 340 was operating fine for 8 weeks then when pressing the power on buton the lens would extend and wind back 3 times before turning itself off . This is the only response I get from the camera when tuning power on. The camera still allows me to download from the card and internal memory . I bought the camera at Melbourne airport as I left for an overseas trip and subsequently lost the warranty form so I am unsure if I will be able to get Olympus to repair or replace the camera.

Sounds to me like it is not getting enough power to do anything else but turn on and then off again. When you are downloading pics. your camera is actually drawing a small amount of power from your USB port to perform the necessary download. Try checking your batterie(s). This MAY be the problem. Hope this helps.

Now that you have established that it is not the battery it seems obvious that the lens is not functioning properly. You have probably already discovered this on your own. As far as Olympus's warranty: Sometimes manufacturers do not require a receipt because they can tell when it was "made" by the serial #. This may or may not be the case with your camera depending on how long you've had it but I figured I could at least throw this tip out there!

Lens errors are quite common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

You can try the following:
1. Try compressed air. With a fine tip blow off gun and dry compressed air (20 lbs) set the tip between the lens turret and the camera body and turn on the air while moving the tip around the lens. It should remove all dust and sand. Turn the camera on and it should function fine.
2. Place the camera on it's back and look at the lens from its side. It may look slightly crooked. If this is the case, power up your camera and apply pressure gently to the side of the lens to center it. It should then extend fully.
3. [Try at your own risk] Try forcing the camera lens. Turn off the camera. Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a click as it pops back into place. If the lens is stuck at an angle, put the edge of the lens not the flat front, on the edge of a table and press the lens back towards the center. It will either click back in place and work or it will break off one of the three pins that ride in the grooves of the lens barrel. Try powering the camera back on.

If your lens isn't coming out when you turn it on then here is a neat trick you can try to actually solve the problem

with the camera off ,, grip the lens with your fingers if you can or a large tweezer.. Press the power button and pull out the lens at the same time.. wait a minute or two and push the lens back in if it aint going in on its own. repeat this a few times until it starts to move in on its own..

You say you've tried fixes 1-4. Your symptom sounds like the lens is trying 3 times to open fully and then gives up. Why haven't you tried fix #5?

Focus problem olympus fe 34o

Not focusing at every distance - close to far ?? That seems like a lens problem to me and how the lens is focused, once its fully extended, varies between camera brands. .
Have you dropped this camera or knocked the lens when it has been open ?? Or have you dropped it at the beach and got sand or grit in the lens ??. If it is a lens problem it will have to go back to the service agent for repairs - ther is nothing you can adjust inside unless you are a camera technician

When I press the power button, the screen stays black and the lens goes in and out and then it dies. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

First sounds like poor battery, but you've checked that of course. Other cause might be dirt between the lense's retracting parts which prevents the lense to fully extend.

If your camera is still under warranty, the best thing you can dois to take it to the nearest official repair shop and Olympus Digital Cameras shouldfix it for free.

If your camera is out of warranty, or if Olympus refuses to repairit for free (happens sometimes if for example they suspect the camera has not been treated properly) you can try some ofthe methods listed here to repair it yourself. These simple methodshave helped a lot of people fix their cameras.

Before trying any of the suggestions, make sure your Olympus Digital Cameras has fresh batteries and it is in recording mode.

1) Remove the batteries from the camera, wait for a couple of minutes, then put them back in and turn the camera on.

2) Try compressed air. With a fine tip blow off gun and drycompressed air (20 lbs) set the tip between the lens turret and thecamera body and turn on the air while moving the tip around the lens.It should remove all dust and sand. Turn the camera on and it shouldfunction fine.

3) Another method is to tap the padded USB cover part on a hard surface, for example, a desk. It sounds so simple, but veryoften in works.

4) Try forcing the camera lens:

Turn off the camera. Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended.

Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a "click" as it pops back into place. Try powering the camera back on.

If the lens doesn't extend at all or it extends, and then retracts again, do the following. Turn the camera off. Take the camera in one hand and with the other gently take one part of the lens and gently move it round in a circular movement. Do so with both sections of the lens. You will hear a "click" as it pops back in place. Power the camera on.

Another version of this fix would be to pull and twist on the largest ring of the lens while turning the camera on. Listen for a "click". If at first the focus seems to be off, turn the camera on and off and take lots of pictures, close ups and distance. Focus should slowly start improving.

5) If that doesn't work, there is an online guide for dismantling Olympus Digital Cameras and fixing the E18 error. (NOTE: Try this only if your camera is no longer under warranty!)It is a great guide with pictures and it can be found here.

There are 2 other guides, one Bulgarian and one Estonian with the take apart procedure for Canon cameras. They are not in english but have a lot of pictures which help with the process.

- Bulgarian guide
- Estonian guide
