Re: Accessing

If you can get another hard drive and place it in the enclosure plug usb cable in then turn on the enclosure and see if this works if doesnt place it on another unit or pc and see if it accepts if it does then the usb drivers need to be re-installed goto my computer device manager and find usb it looks like a trident hilight this and click uninstall from menu list in properties then on the top of manager there will be a computer with a spyglass click on this and windows will find new devices let it continue then reboot then re-try enclosure if all goes well it will come up found new device. retry other hdd you first placed in enclosure if it dosen't feel hdd is turning the platters then get rid of hdd. hope this goes well

Windows 7 NexStar CX USB 2.0 3.5 inch SATA drive when connecting, windows 7 can't recognize the USB drive and shows a message "unknown device". The blue light of the the hard drive...

This is the usual reason:
USB port has 4 pins (connectors). The two at the ends supply 5 Volts to the hard drive (or any other appliance you connect. I don't think there's a problem with those two because you can see the power light on the hard drive.
The middle is for data transfer. If one gets damaged, although the device gets power, the OS cannot recognize the device.
Try changing the USB cable you are using. Connectors in the wire are damaged more easily than those in the device.

Nothing happens when I plug this in. I've tried eSATA and USB, both with the power adapter. The blue light comes on but nothing else. The hard drive works in other enclosures so I know that isn't the...

Your assumptions are leading in the right direction.
  • The blue light would just be denoting power to the device the red light would denote drive activity. The limitation on this enclosure is that its white papers states a "Hard Drive Compatibility: 320GB HDD capacity", but I have seen people use a 500GB drive that seemed to work. If your using a drive larger then 320GB this may be an issue.
  • The enclosure HDD combo is Plug-N-Play via USB so this would mean drivers most likely are not the issue. I don't believe drivers are even packaged with the device which would mean they use protocol standard drivers from the OS.
  • Make sure that you are not hooking the USB up to a external USB hub (especially a bus-powered one) while trouble shooting as it may not provide enough power. Connect the drive up to system USB controller directly while trouble shooting.
  • I believe this device has the ability to hook up 2 USB cables at the same time for extra power (mainly while using the eSATA connection). Try hooking up the USB mini-B connector and the USB +5VDC connector and then hooking both up to the system on two different USB ports. This should then correct the possibility that your drive may not be getting enough power.
  • Lastly, the enclosure could have a faulty IC on the PCB. Exchanging it would provide the answer for that.

All of my applications are closed and I cannot eject my NexStar device. How do I safely eject it?

Occasionally this will happen... if you are not using the drive in any way, you can simply remove the usb cable from your computer and it will not affect your external harddrive.

CPU won't read it im running xp

Ok, here's some step by step instructions.

First is the light on the nexstar coming on when you plug it in, if so what colour? If not try using both USB connectors on the PC end to plug in, it's possible you're not getting enough power if the light is not on as many 2.5" hdd enclosures require 2 USB connections one for power and data and the other for additional power.

Next, if the light is on but no drive in my computer, right-click on my computer, then left-click manage, select disk management from the MCC window that pops up. If your Nexstar HDD shows up here, identify it on the bottom part of the window and report back what is said there.

If it is not there and the light is on, try a different USB port. If the light is not on or you tried the other ports and still no luck the enclosure itself may have failed.

Try moving the HDD into a new enclosure and try again. If this works, Great, if not then the HDD may be damaged and may need a pro to get your files back. If that is the case report back here with your progress and region and I will recommend an appropriate pro.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Vantec Nexstar 3 HD not being recognized on comp

Hi, I had this same problem - blue light flashing and the drive not being recognised.

The problem was with the power cord, not the drive.

I solved the problem by unplugging the connection on the power cord between the outlet end and the power brick section, and re-plugging them after flipping one of the ends over.

The drive was now getting power correctly and spun up and was recognised as usual.

Nexstar External drive

If neither computers detect it, which is a good form of process of elimination, I would test the cable with a known working. I would then extract the drive from the enclosure. And try mounting into a desktop machine as a slave, or find another enclosure.
