I cant get to far into detail but where the ink comes out of the cartrage is probably inlarged. It may be just a defect in the printer, cartrage or poor hadling no offence.

Ive just bought this printer from currys & im trying to print a picture from my memory sd card & the picture is coming out all smudged? could it be because im not using photographic paper?

You should be able to select the paper type you use before starting the print. The printer should optimise the print to match the paper you have specified. If the paper is not for photos, it shouldn't matter too much unless the ink is taking too long to dry. It is more likely that your print heads are skimming the paper or something is brushing the image while the ink is still wet.

Element that dries the ink on photos isn't working after replacing ink cartridges.

heating element in a photosmart printer?
have you made sure you're printing to the right sort of paper in the printer settings. it's obviously dispensing too much ink for the paper you're using.

PICTURE IS SMUGGED

If you're printing on photo paper, make sure you are printing on the correct side. Most photo paper has only one side to print on, the other side is a non-porous backing, and ink will sit on the surface until it dries (15 - 30 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity). And it won't look good even when it dries.

If you're printing on the correct side, try a different brand/type of photo paper.

Brand new canon ink cartridges but my photographs are printing green. I tried the test print out and it came out ok. Could the photo paper I have be the problem?

Usually if your using the wrong photo paper the ink will come out wet on the print instead of drying while coming out of the tray. Printer settings then need to be changed.

I would also suggest cleaning the print heads. But you say this is a brand new machine. I'm also assuming you are using canon cartridges which would eliminate the head cleaning. Was the software installed ok also. (Driver anyway).

When I print on photo paper the ink doesn't dry and picture quality is unrecognisable

You have to match your print settings with the correct type of media used !

When you print, set the preferences, set to PHOTO quality and not draft, set paper type to PHOTO PAPER, or GLOSSY PHOTO PAPER whichever - If you select wrong media type your colors might be off. Select the settings that match the closest to your media. If you use paper use "plain paper" setting, if you use glossy photo paper, use "glossy photo paper" as settings and PHOTO quality.

I recommend use you use inkjet PHOTO paper, glossy, you can use HP or EPSON or even the cheap LIKON ones work amazing for me, they should be able to dry quickly, if they don't you are not using the correct settings.

By your description above it looks like you are using economy or draft mode - NOT good for photo paper.

Color photos come out awful!

I can only hazard a guess but it sounds like your photo paper is not absorbing the ink correctly or the ink does not have time to dry before the next page comes out

As for transfer to next page do you mean when the next one comes out and drops on the first or as it is going through the printer.

If it is after it comes out then you may want to print one at a time and take them off the printer before the next one comes out and place it where it can dry.

Photos do take a little longer to dry than regular paper.

This may be the cause

Lexmark 5400 Printer does not use the photo cartridge

First of all as this Catridges are Non Intelligent they will not be able to show u the exact Ink level on the catridge then too if thats really happening this Solution below will fix it: In this case what i would request u to do is....... Take out both the catridges from the Printer......... Take 2 Paper Towels one should be wet with Luke warm water and the other one should be dry........... Take the Colour catridge first turn it upside down and u will see a small copper plate on the catridge from where the ink comes out....... Place the wet paper towel using ur thumb on the Copper plate and press it a lit bit for 10 Seconds...... Now remove it and see whether u see any ink on the paper towel.......... U should see some ink on it now place the dry paper towel on the ink catridge in the same way........ Now do the same procedure again.......... Do the same procedure twice on the Black Catridge................. Now take the dry paper towel and turn the direction of the cartridge so that u can see a Copper plate on it with small boxes just clean that copper plate with the Dry Paper Towel.......... Know insert both the catridges inside the Printer the Colour Catridge should go in the right side and the Photo on the left........ Good Luck
