Way ahead of you; I did all of that or tried all of that several times already(except for reinstalling win xp again; unfortunately, I can't since this pc was given to me and I don't have the CD). so I guess my pc will be without sound for the rest of it's life. I even tried a system restore. no good; no matter what date I attempt to return to, my pc won't accept it. a message says "system restore was unable to restore your computer to the date specified"(or something like that).

I should also point out that my pc is slower without sound.
why is the loss of sound making my pc slow?

So, to reiterate and summarize: all I did was uninstall realtek ac97. nothing else. when it was uninstalled, I had no sound coming from my pc. I know my pc has sound because when my.pc is booted up or shut down, I hear a 'thump' sound from the speakers. plus, I connected the speakers to a cd player and sound comes from them, but not when they are connected to my pc(other than the thump sound). I just wish there were one person, at least, on this earth who knows what the problem is. why or how did the uninstall of realtek ac97 cause the lack of sound? this pc is windows based, but yet microsoft does not have any drivers or updates for their drivers? they don't or can't solve this problem? what gives, bill gates?

best sol: go to start button ----->click RUN----->Type devmgmt.msc in Text Box ----->

Device Manager windows appears , click on Sound, video and game controllers(+),
if you see "Realtek AC97 drivers"(if they are visible...) then we can make sure that sound                     drivers are loaded in ur system, otherwise you have load it again.....

i) my best advice would be, dont mess up with installing, reinstalling, uninstalling sound drivers rather try   to format or reload your OS again(Windows XP) and then install drivers.

ii)  try to check volume on your speakers, volume in windows or system , volume in media players sometimes they may set to mute of no volume.......

iii) try to check all sound physcial connection that run from your computer to speakers, including power connections, cable connection ....or just remove and replace them(reseating...)

iv) try connecting a headset to your sound port, sometimes your subwoofers or speakers may fail.....

Thanking You

Somehow lost my sound card driver

The super-cheapie models use Realtek AC97 2-channel drivers, while the multi channels use Realtex HD drivers. You can go direct to Realtek's website (google "realtek drivers" and go to their website.

Control Panel / System / hit the "hardware" tab, device manager, scroll down to "sound video and game controllers" hit the plus sign to the left, and your audio devices should be listed. The one with the yellow sign of doom is the problem device, and the name of the device is the one you want from Realtek.

Rather than let Windows search for it, I'd rather take it from Realtek, and run the install. Afterwards, burn it to a CD for use when you upgrade, or reinstall your OS.

That will happen sooner or later, so best be prepared.

Below are two links where you can find the drivers for your sound card.
After downloadiing them follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers.

You can also do it through your Device Manager console.

You might want to also try the realtek website for more info.
Hope everything works fine
