I have no sound on my desktop computer. All volume controls are set to maximum, yet I cannot get a single sound from the speakers. I have a Compaq Presario processor and HP monitor. Any ideas?

(In order of things to try)

1. Make sure everything is plugged in properly (speaker power, connection from speakers to computer), etc.

2. (Clarification) By all volume controls, does that include the windows sound panel options? It may be on mute. Tell me what operating system you're using and I can help you with this one. Also, your keyboard may have a mute button. Try pressing that if it does.

3. Plug in another pair of speakers/headsets to your computer and see if those work. If they don't, it's either #2 or your sound card.

4. If it is definitely not #2, it is your sound card. You'll have to purchase a new one. Go to your local computer parts dealer to get one, they can help you. If you don't have one, buy one from www.newegg.com . Post questions here or on forums, don't waste money on someone from Geek Squad or anything. Installing sound cards and the like is pain-free and easy.

Sound (volume) of media player is at maximum but still very soft.

Go to your volume control via Control Panel or double click on speaker icon on task bar and check sound settings and computer volume or check your speaker's volume. Otherwise your speaker at fault.

I have just installed speakers on my computer, but I can't get any sound.

Check to make sure the speakers power up.

Check to make sure you have installed the speakers into the correct jack on the back of the PC.

Go into Control Panel and check the settings by double-clicking the "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon. Make sure the Mute box isn't checked and that the volume is turned up.

BOSTON ACOUSTICS BA735 volume is LOWER than MAXIMUM LEVEL

OK, a few things here. First of all, what program are you using to listen to music? Some programs have an automatic volume leveling setting. If you're using Windows Media Player, it has one. Next, you should NEVER set any speaker/volume/amplifier knob to Maximum setting if you want to get any life out of your speakers. Speaker ratings are for consistent volume levels at a "clean" power level. When you turn any music source up past 80% you are pushing more distortion through the speakers that they cannot reproduce without self destructing. The human ear cannot hear this, and the volume gain is minimal. Next we'll talk about that your dealing with a combination of power levels compiling into an amplifier that may be taking in more than it can aptly amplify according to it's power multiplier scheme to increase the volume at the speaker level. If you've got everything maxed out, you're probably just pushing it all WAY too hard. All over exerted energy that is not being used productively will end up in generating heat and distortion. Those are your 2 biggest enemies when it comes to anything audio. Distortion tears voice coils and generates disruptive electrical currents, and heat destroys circuitry and components in amplifiers. The times where they jump up in volume, just look at that as borrowed time until they blow. If you want louder, get a better or more powerfully rated set, and still, NEVER turn it up past 80% if you want it to last.

Sound

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, then double click the "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon. Make sure the Mute box isn't checked and the Volume bar is at least 1/2 way on the Volume tab. Also click the Speaker Volume tab and adjust the sound there as well if needed. You might also want to check the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" icon so you can easily adjust the sound settings next time.

Loudness Equalization : on

Equalizer: Choose one (Jazz seems to be loudest setting but sounds of hallway effect so I use powerful for clarity.)

This has more than doubled the level of volume on my acer 5570.
