- Wow, thank you SO much for answering me. I'll try not to sound like an idiot here. Funny thing... there is no icon, like there used to be on my old Dell laptop telling me that wireless network has been found. During the installation process of the d-link software, it located my wireless network (said 100% signal and I was sitting in the next room, so I assume that was it), said it was locked, and setup asked for the network encryption password. On the side of my little AT&T Uverse tower thing (not a techie) next to my desktop system that they replaced my former modem with, I found a System Password # and a Wireless Network Key #. For the encryption # I gave setup the System Password #. I hope that was what they were asking for. I had no idea my network was locked. Do I have a wireless modem connected to my router? Trying to understand the question. On the new laptop there is just the d-link card, and on my desktop we the AT&T Uverse guys disconnected our old modem and put in this tall tower thing that says local ethernet, wireless, phone 1, phone 2, broadband, etc. What is that called? Thanks.

- We have wireless service, but we have never used it. This is the first time we have tried to connect to it. I did use the wireless setup wizard on my desktop, but it wanted me to plug a flashdrive into the wireless router, and then to the laptop to add it. There is no standard USB port in the wireless router-- only a really tiny one. I tried just doing the whole thing over again and still my laptop is not giving me confirmation of recognition of our wireless signall-- ony during the setup process. Yes the network key # was really long. Thanks.

- I know this sounds stupid, but... with what cable? There is no cable.

Dec 31, 2008

- Yes. I do. Just tell me what to do and when. I am a teacher and I don't have to go back to school until Monday.

- I'll check back this afternoon, Thank you so much for this. S

- Do I need to have a separate cable or can I just unplug my desktop cable for this reason, plug it into my laptop, and plug it back into the desktop when we are finished? If that will work, I can do it tonight at 7:00 or 8:00, or name another time. Staying home and not doing anything. : ) I'll check back after supper ~ 6:00 central time here. S

- Checking in?

Jan 01, 2009

- No internet phone.

I have the AT&T Uverse unit which replaced my old external modem. Can I just unplug the cable than runs from my desktop tower to the AT&T Uverse THING (I don't know what it's called), and plug in in to the laptop instead?

There should be a network cable that has connectors on it that look like phone connectors but larger. If you don't have one, you can purchase one at the office supply store or even at Wal_mart's electronics section.

Congrats on the new Dell. I bought one for my wife and she loves it. I think what you are seeing is the hard wire lan connection. If a network connection points to this connector and there is no cable in it you will get that message. Silly question, but do you have a wireless router connected to your modem? You should see an icon down on the bottom right corner telling you that wireless networks have been found and yours should be the first one available since it would be the strongest of any in your area. Post me again if you need more info. Good luck.

- So you guys already use wireless and this computer is simply connecting to that? Was the encryption number a real long number?

Dec 27, 2008

- can you connect the laptop to the internet with the cable?

Dec 29, 2008

- I wanted to know if you can get the computer on the internet with a Cat 5 cable. Come out of the 10-100 lan port in the back of your computer. I am asking this because we may be able to do a remote link up. That way I can see exactly what is going on there. I am sure I can fix it for you.I just need to see the problem first hand. If you have questions about this feel free to ask. I have fixed computer problems many times this way.

- Do you want to do a remote connection?

Dec 31, 2008

- We can do a remote any time this weekend just name a time. We will use a program called Team Viewer. It is free and very safe. Here is the website so you can see it for yourself.

- Well the first thing we will need to do is take a look at the system you have. Do you have a desktop computer that connects to the router and then to the modem? Do you have internet phone?Lets make sure you have all connected properly.
Internet connection to modem.
Modem to voice adapter if you have internet phone.
Voice adapter to wireless router wireless router.
If no voice adapter for the phone then just skip it.
Computer goes into the lan port 1. on the wireless router.
Let me know if this is what you have.
