I had a H20-600 that worked consistently until I unplugged it, then it would not power up unless the unit was warmed to its operating temp. (I placed it on an old iron radiator, warmed it up, it then powered up). The power supply on the unit had several failed, crowned capacitors (3300uf/10v). I pulled them, tested them (one was bad), and then replaced with good caps. Up the unit came. The PS in this unit is a switching unit and needs healthy caps to oscillate and create sub voltages. The standing heat in the unit makes the caps get hot, crown and leak. See any brown sputum on the top of a capacitor and it is on the road to failure.
searching for satellite signal means its not getting a connection between the satellite and the receiver itself. you can check on the back of the receiver where the satellite cables comes in, unplug the satellite cable make sure there is a copper pin sticking striaght up there to make sure its getting a good connection. also if you know where your splitter is, it has a few lines coming in and a few coming out, its somewhere between the dish and the receivers. usually in an attic or basement, or it could be at the dish itself. make sure those lines are tight, no cracks or breaks in the lines. also if your dish is easily accessible check the connections at the dish to make sure none of them have come undone or loose.
When it's rebooting, on the first blue screen press 02468 on the remote. This will force a software update. If you have trouble getting it enter at the right time or you just want to make sure, just keep pressing 02468 until it goes to the update. It won't hurt any thing. Hope this helps.
unplug the power from the reciever for a few moments. plug it back in and let it load. once its finished turn to channel 201. Usually it the reciever is on an unavailable channel (channel with no programming) when it restarted it will go back to that unavailable channel hince the black screen and no sound.
I guess the obvious question is, do you have a DirecTV dish installed on your house? If you do, then most likely the cable you have plugged into the Satellite Input on the back of the receiver isn't connected to the dish. I would recommend calling DirecTV and having them send a tech out to double check the system.
