Question about LaCie (301074) 80 GB Hard Drive

Open Question

Hi, I have both a Mac and a PC and am connected a LAcie external hardrive 1TB Safe hard. Used to work Fine on the mac until i wanted to make a back up not through Time machine but Dragging and droping and realised that my mac wasnt recongising it. I tried it on the Mac Book and still no appearance not even in disk utility. I then tried it on my Pc and still didnt come up in disk managment. I was reading on forums and the most popular occurance which i noticed was that the disk bototed up and just kept spinning for 2 seconds and repeated the same noise for about 5 times and many people have this problem it turnes out its the Power Cord causing the problem the actual transformer box in the middle. i have been listening to the transformer box and it doesnt sound healthy with a distoured noise. Wondering if u have any solutions

check wires connecting them together first, ok?

then, turn off the LaCie, connect to your MacPro, and then turn on the drive..

that should show as a mounted drive.

SOURCE: Lacie 320 GB Hard Drive acting as if full when it's not.

Simplest solution: back up the data on the drive and repartition it (which will wipe it). Otherwise it sounds like it could be a problem with the file tree or structure of the drive, the configuration files could be corrupt, some program could have stored temporary files in a hidden place that cannot be deleted without making the program delete them, etc. If you are on a mac, spotlight Disk Utility and use it to repartition. If you are on a PC use the search thing from the start menu and find a program called disk management (or something similar to that, you'll know it when you see it.) external drives are annoying. i kick mine into the wall periodically for good measure.

The disk-drive inside the casing has a probably-fatal problem.

Search online for a professional "Data Recovery Service";
ship them your disk-drive, they repair it, just long-enough to copy
all your files onto a brand-new disk-drive, or to burn to DVD-recordable media. Their services are _EXPENSIVE_ -- but "invaluable".

Whenever there is an HFS Volume could not be repaired issue, that means that your hard drive's existing volume has been damaged and may not be retrievable. In most cases like this, you would be advised to perform an Erase and Install to correct the damaged directory on your portable HD. However, as I understand that is not what you want to do, you may want to research Mac Utility software like these titles below:

Disc Warrior 4.1
font.f1 {font: 12.0px Helvetica}
(for Macs from Alsoft)

Tech Tools Pro 5.0 (for Macs from Micromat)

Drive Genius 2 - Mac (for Macs from Prosoft Engineering)

These are three of the better hard drive diagnostics, repair and directory rebuilding software on the market for Mac Users. I have used them a number of times as a professional onsite Certified Mac technician and they have helped me to help the customers I assisted many times over.

These Mac Utility software all have a price point of under $100.00 and when you are able to experience just how well they work, you find it is worth the investment.

an HFS volume error is repairable with the right software and these utilities are your best option aside from outright erasing and installing your Lacie HD.

SOURCE: my lacie hard disk 1tb all of a sudden isnt

Just contact www.lacie.com great support. their answer for my drive was to reboot the drive. For me it worked.

Follow the procedure below to reset the Network Space to factory defaults:

  1. Move the power switch to the OFF position. Wait for the drive to shut down.
  2. Turn ON the drive.
  3. Within about 3 seconds, flip the switch OFF and On several times.
  4. Immediately turn it ON
If the light flashes quickly, the unit is resetting itself. Attempt to connect to the drive again after about 1 minute using the default username and password (by default, they are both admin.)

It could be that your new mac has a newer operating system on it, so I think you should be using the new itego backup assistant from iomega see http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10323 this tells you what it does and you can also download it from here as well

Hope this helps

I have a lacie had drive that i've been using on my mac. My mac died and I bought a PC instead. How can I retrieve the data I stored on my Lacie?

The easiest way that I know is to purchase a program called MacDrive from Mediafour.com

This will let your PC (Windows XP, Vista or Windows7) read the mac formatted HD directly

They do have a trial version, so you can make sure it'll work for your HD before you pay for it.

the problem is that your lacie drive operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) under USB which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple mac is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac if you wish to use it via the USB connection.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

Can an older Lacie drive (2005?) work with an HP tablet?

The native file system for Macs is HFS. If the drive was originally used with a Mac, the current file system on the drive is HFS. Windows uses NTFS and is not compatible with HFS; which is why Windows doesn't recognize the drive as valid.

You can download a data retrieval tool called MacDrive that will give Windows the ability to speak Mac. There is a free trial available and it should be able to help you grab the files off of the drive.
