Question about Clarion MAX385VD Car DVD Player

1 Answer

I just installed a Clarion max385vd. When we turn the headlights on, the buttons and screen illumination on the head unit keep flashing from dim to bright. Everything else is working perfect.

If the illumination wire is not connected, will the buttons still light up for night usage?

Illumination wire does not need to be installed on this model. depending on your car, it may use odd voltage for the dash lights. Clip and tape off the illumination wire going to the harness.

yes... they will be bright all the time.

illumination works off your dimmer switch. It takes the brightness down as the dash lights are dimmed. Without the attenuation, they will stay on bright full time.

This are the wits for the Clarion model vb475 I think I'm missing the illumination or that Orange wire for it but what wire is what

Look on page 31 in the owner's manual and it will show all the wires and what they are for. The orange wire is for the illumination control and dims the display when the headlights are turned on.
Get the owner's manual here >> http://clarion.com/ca/en/pdf/VB475_Manual.pdf

How I can reset a Clarion MAX385VD?

The fist thing I can suggest you you is unplug any peripheral cables and memory cards, and reset the unit. To reset the MAX385VD, on the lower right side of the unit - there is a pin hole. Inside the hole is a reset button.

To access -bend a paperclip - then insert it into the hole. With the vehicle ON - Press and hold the reset for 5 seconds and then re-try.

I need precise information on connecting the parking brake wire on the clarion vx409. Do i connect it to the parking brake button or do i connect it to the light on the instrument pannel / dash. Also what'...

Connect your parking brake wire to the ground side of the parking brake switch above the pedal, or at the parking brake lever. As for the the illumination wire, if the wiring harness on the factory side does not have illumination wire, ignore it. It is only used to dim the screen when you turn you lights on. If you really want the feature and do not have the lead on your factory harness. Run it to the headlight switch and connect it to the positive lead

Park brake switch

If you have the old firmware then all you need to do is ground the parking brake wire..

if you have the new firmware(just bought the system) a toggle switch is involved:
1 - connect e-brake wire from dvd unit to the switch
2 - connect a ground wire from switch to the unit chassis(any good metal grounding surface will do)
3 - pop in a dvd, toggle the switch back and forth 2 or 3 times depending on what wire you placed where...and voilaa!! your dvd system should work in motion!!

My screen went dim and only the power button works

Most likely an insufficient ground is the culprit. Clarions are VERY dependent on a good ground. Check your connections - again...redo the ground if there's no change. If that doesn't work, take it to your local car stereo installer and ask them NICELY to diagnose the prob (probably free) if they do it FREE, buy the dude lunch $10
Good Luck

I just got a Clarion DXZ385USB deck installed, but the screen does not appear blue as in the product pictures. It is dark and barely readable. Dimmer is turned off. Any ideas?

I didn't have to connect the illumination lead. If you have the battery wires(yellow) connected, the screen will light up pretty bright. When I connected the illumination wires(orange), I got the same dim screen light effect.

I need to install a max385vd in a 2002 pord f-350, do i need an install kit?

Regardless of whether this is an amp or a head unit, an install kit is either very helpful or necessary. If it's an amp, you'll need it for sure - you can't power an amp with 18 gauge factory power wiring like a head unit can use. You need to get at least 10 gauge power and ground wire, 18 gauge remote turn-on wire, and RCA patch cables to conduct the sound. If you have a factory head unit, you'll also need a line-level adapter to give you a source for the RCA patch cables.

If this is a head unit, you'll need the adapter harness to plug your existing stereo harnesses into the new head unit. It makes it simple - the wires on the new head unit are color-coded for what they do, and the adapter harness is identically coded. Match the colors, then plug it in. You may also need an antenna wire adapter (some cars require this).
