Question about Coleman Propane Forced Air Heater w/Electronic Ignition (50,000-80,000 BTU)

1 Answer

I have a 15 year old Coleman Propane 130,000 Btu force air furnace, Model #BGU13020 forced air furnace. Afer the unit runs for 5 to 10 minuets, the flame will start to shuter and then it will trip the heat safety swith mounted to the burner housing. My local authorized Colman repair guy is telling me that my heat exchanger or baffles are going bad and that I need to replace the furnace. I have removed the burner and inspected the inside of the heat exchanger, and it seems to be preety solid in there. It seems to me that the gas valve is malfuntioning, but the repair man told me he checked it and it is working fine. My questions are, is it possible to remove the exchanger and the baffles for closer inspection without taking the furnace out completly, and if so can either one be repaired, and can a back yard handy man trouble shoot the gas valve with a basic volt meter?

DO NOT attempt to repair this yourself. LP gas is a very unforgiving gas. Sounds like your heat exchanger is plugged. Yes it can be removed and checked, BUT it is not recommended. Trust your local repair tech. Any heater 15+ years old should be discarded.

My Coleman propane furnace kicks out once and a wile and flashes a 10 flash code (gas flow with no call for heat) what need to be fixed the furnace is only 1 year old.

This sounds like you have an intermittent main board problem. It may be turning on you furnace when the thermostat is not calling for heat. It also could be a short in your low voltage(thermostat wire) going to your furnace. Either way you need to have it checked. It's under a year it should still be under warranty.

The flame starts to fluter after 5 to 10 minuets and it trips the

i'm guesing this is in a mobile home.this furnace is hard to see the baffles.you really can't check baffles unless you get on the roof and pull cap and look down with flash light but that still doesnt tell much. have you checked to see if you have combustion air coming in to that room. if this is in a mobile home should be a flex pipe in ceiling or some times it comes from underneath make sure you have air from out side coming through. If this is a mobile home if you have alot of snow on roof this will cause the same problem you are having. i would check the flue and intake air first before i took furnace apart. Gas valve doesn't usually cause this problem. the repair guy is probally right but i would check the two thing i told you about first.

Coleman forced air furnace blower

Rmove the two screws holding the blower in place and slide it out. With the power off, rotate the wheel and inspect for debris or an impingement. If everything turns easy, you have a bad motor or start capacitor. If you have rubbing, adjust the wheel. If the motor will not turn, replace it.
