I had a Lite-On DVDRW that I recently replaced as well but it didn't fail. I upgraded my system and had to get a SATA DVD. I got an LG DVD-RAM that works great for CD and DVD single and dual layer in both XP and OS X86 10.5.5.
It was 40 dollars at Frys. You can get it online at www.frys.com if there is no Fry's Electronics in your area.
