Question about GE GSS20IEPWW / GSS20IEPCC Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

GE g2220iephww Refrigerator too warm at top, too cold at bottom.

After defrost the fridge works fine for about a month, then begins to warm in both compartments at the top, and get too cold on both compartments at the bottom. No great amount of frost in freezer side at time of defrost. I also don't put the food items in front of the cooling device at top, or touching the sides of the appliance. The appliance is kept reasonably full at all times, but not overflowing. I can also hear the fans working just fine. I no longer use icemaker as it is too annoying at time of defrost (but it's use make no difference in time between defrosts). The doors seal fine, and no lights stay on while closed.
Suggestions on where to start repair, or just throw in the towel and move on? Thanks!!!!

If you are manually defrosting by turning the refrigerator off or unplugging to defrost, then you've got one of the following -

1) Defrost heater has failed
2) Defrost sensor has failed
3) Defrost timer/refrigerator control has failed.

As ice builds on the evaporator, if not defrosted properly, the accumulated ice restricts airflow through the evaporator, which reduces air flow and air velocities through the box. Lower velocity allows the cold air to fall to the bottom of the box, warmer air to the top of the box.

Is there any frost buildup on the rear panel inside the freezer? If so you have a defrost problem of a bad defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer/ control board. If no frost then you probably have a clogged defrost drain. Remove the rear panel to access drain hole.

Freezer working but refrigerator is not cooling

if freezer is close to zero, top to bottom, and fridge is warm(ing), then you likely have a defrost problem, you will notice an abundance of snow/frost on back wall of freezer. it could either be your heater, thermistor, defrost safety thermostat, or your defrost control/main cpu, depending on model. if either or both sides are warm at the top, and cold at bottom, then your freezer fan is out. again depending on your model, it may just be the fan, or a combination fan/main cpu board hope this helps

GE fridge is warm and broken; the freezer is cold though.

Air circulation problem. Evaporator fan in freezer moves some air to refrig. Either fan is not working or air passages are blocked with ice. If ice found, then a defrost component failure has occurred. Fix what you find.
