My DVD/CD burner will recognize DVD's fine and will burn them as well. It will not recognize CD's for reading or writing. I have upgraded the firmware and tried all thet I know.
My MD16XDVD9 doesnt work. Its power is on with the small greeen light flickering and the bigger green light steadily on. but the DVD tray doesnot open automatically. Even if it is force-opened and a disc inserted, it doesnt play and the computer says "please insert disc".
It looks like as if the instrument is in Standby mode or so
how can i make it working?

You need to try a commercial cd of any kind. You just want to see if it reads the cd. Then you want to try a dvd and see if it reads that. If it reads the cd but has trouble with the dvd then the heads are out of alignment. It might still write a cd but not be able to write a dvd as that require more accuracy and it doesn't have it anymore.
You may still be able to use the drive but you will have to replace it. The symptoms you describe are typical of the driver going out of alignment so I would say you are heading for replacement sooner or later.
These are not cost effective to repair anymore so all you can do is replace them. Unless you can get it replaced under warranty you can replace it for under $50 at any local computer store.
right click on the drive.... go to properties... under tab recording, remove tick "enable CD recording on this drive" and press apply... after that tick "enable CD recording on this drive" and press OK. It should work.
Chek wtat is written on front panel
If it DVD-RW it can record only DVD-R blank, if it + so only +R
or DVD-RAM. If it is DVD +/- RW or RAM it can record any disk.
Also chek the speed for you DVD and disk you using.
If you dvd maximum speed for recording is for example 2.7, 4, 8 you should use only DVD with max speed 2.7, 4, 8 or 1-8, 1-16 etc. So they should be labeled the same as you DVD
Good Luck
Ok, the reason is quite simple. The Philips DVD8421 does not recognise the DVD-R format. Not all DVD/CD burners read all discs. It does recognise DVD+R though. So all you need to do is use these discs instead. This should solve your problem.
My Optorite DD0405 will not burn a DVD+R DL disk? is this because its not supported by the burner? I have Nero 9 and would like to burn 4.8 GB of a file from my desk top to a DVD DL with 8.5 GB space. How can I do this Thank You
Sounds like an issue with the drive. Is your computer still under warranty? If so then I would call dell and get it replaced. If not, then I would replace it myself.
