Headphone Jack on Envision LCD TV

I've owned an Envision L37W698 LCD TV for about a year and love it. But, when trying to use my headphones, I plugged the 3.5mm audio cord into the "headphones" jack, the headphones work just fine, but the TV speakers go mute - in other words, I can't use headphones and speakers at the same time. I can plug the 3.5mm plug into an RCA adapter and plug the red/white plugs into the "audio out" plugs on the TV. The headphones work, but the quality is poor (static, low volume). The headphones are new and work perfectly on other TVs in the house. Any ideas?

Thanks anyway, but this solution has nothing to do with the problem I posted.

Only a guess but the headphone jack may be damaged.
Part of the jack is a switch that opens when headphones are plugged in.

How can I get headphones to work with my Symphonic WF203 TV?

This set doesn't have a headphone jack, nor does it have RCA audio output jacks. Without one or the other, you're out of luck connecting headphones to this TV.

I remember a product some years ago that allowed adding headphones using a small microphone placed in front of the speaker. This was hooked to a little amplifier that ran the headphones so the volume could be independently controlled. It was marketed as a way to let "hearing-impaired" family members listen to TV shows without needing to make it uncomfortably loud for others. I haven't looked, but something similar might still be available. It's cumbersome, though, and needs power, plus maybe being costly if you find one.

It's possible to add a headphone jack, but you need to know how to do electronic soldering. Find a spot on the case where you can make a hole and mount a headphone jack, then wire it to the speakers. If you want the headphones to cut off the speakers when plugged in, you need a switching jack, and the speaker wires need to be cut and connected to the correct terminals. The switch built into the jack then disconnects the speakers when the headphone plug is in. If you don't need to turn off the speakers it's a little easier. You just need to wire from the jack to the speaker terminals. I've added jacks on quite a few sets. If you don't feel up to it and don't know anyone who is, you can see if a TV shop (if there are any left in your area!) would do it. (The shop I used to work for charged about $20, including the jack, but that was over 10 years ago now.)

Good luck, and thanks for using Fixya!

We are trying to hook our TV up to our computer to use it as a monitor. What cords do we need to do this besides the normal monitor cord?

if you want audio as well, it will depend on what kind of audio connection your tv has next to the VGA (computer monitor) connection. If it looks like the normal RCA audio, (red and white plugs) you will need to get a male headphone jack (to plug into your computer headphone or speaker out jack) to stereo RCA cable so you would have a headphone jack on one side of the cable and a red and white plug on the other side. Now if your TV just has what look like a headphone jack next to the VGA (computer monitor plug) you will need to buy a male to male stereo headphone jack cable. for both of these, just make sure the cable you get it long enough, or buy an extension.

Have new lcd hdtv. Have old headphones can they

Yes. 2 possibilities:
1 - the new tv has a headphone jack - just plug them in.
2 - no headphone jack - buy a RCA to phone jack adaptor, plug it in the audio line out RCA connectors, plug the headphones into it and mute the tv.

Headphone out jack is really quiet.

Hi,

If you're trying to plug the speakers into the headphone connector that will happen.
Headphones are having a high impedance and those loudspeakers a low impedance.
That's why your volume is down. It stresses your audio-amplifier and even blow your finals.

Cheers,
Gerard
